Russia says will stand firm with China on Syria (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia will offer Washington no explanation for arms deliveries to Syria and together with China will prevent the U.N. Security Council from approving any military intervention in the conflict-torn nation, its foreign minister said on Wednesday.

Using his annual news conference to draw lines in the sand on Syria, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said veto-holding Security Council members Russia and China would stand firm against foreign intervention.

"We will insist - and we have an understanding with our Chinese colleagues that this is our common position - that these fundamental points be retained in any decision that may be taken by the U.N. Security Council," Lavrov said.

"If somebody intends to use force ... it will be on their conscience. They will not receive any authority from the Security Council," said Lavrov, who also emphasized that Russia and China oppose any sanctions against Syria.

Russia has been the most vocal supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during a 10-month government crackdown that the United Nations says has killed more than 5,000 civilians, refusing to join calls for him to step down.

Russia joined China in October to veto a Western-backed resolution against Assad's government, saying the domestic opposition shared blame for the violence and that it would have opened the door for military action like NATO's Libya operation.

Russia submitted its own draft resolution last month and proposed a new version this week, but Lavrov indicated the council was deeply divided over the issue of where blame lies for the bloodshed and the possibility of military intervention.

He said Western members of the Security Council "are categorically determined to exclude from the resolution the phrase that (says) nothing in it can be interpreted as allowing the use of force."

'PLAYING GAMES'

Western diplomats in New York, however, suggested that Russia was playing for time in negotiations on the draft resolution. Two days of negotiations on revising the Russian text failed to resolve the deadlock and bridge differences between the Western and Russian camps.

"Russia's playing games," a Western diplomat told Reuters on condition of anonymity. "Negotiations aren't really going anywhere. China and others would probably agree not to block a tougher resolution, but Russia isn't compromising."

The United States, France and Britain, along with Russia and China, are permanent Security Council members with the power to block any resolution from passage.

Moscow has close ties with Syria, a leading client for arms sales, and its naval maintenance facility in the port of Tartus is a rare outpost for Russia's shrunken post-Soviet military.

A Russian-operated ship carrying what a Cypriot official said was bullets arrived in Tartus last week from St. Petersburg after being held up in Cyprus.

The United States said it had raised concerns about the ship with Russia, but Lavrov said there was no need for an explanation.

"We don't consider it necessary to explain ourselves or justify ourselves, because we are not violating any international agreements or any (U.N.) Security Council resolutions," Lavrov told an annual news conference.

The U.S. envoy to the United Nations, Susan Rice, said on Tuesday that the United States "would have very grave concern about arms flows into Syria from any source" and that it was unfortunate there was no U.N. arms embargo on Syria.

Russia says such an embargo would cut off supplies to the government while enabling armed opponents to receive weapons illegally. Lavrov repeated on Wednesday that Russia and China oppose any sanctions on Syria.

"The red line is quite clear: we will not support any sanctions, because unilateral sanctions have been imposed without any consultation with Russia or China," he said.

Syria accounted for 7 percent of Russia's total of $10 billion in arms deliveries abroad in 2010, according to the Russian defense think tank CAST.

An unnamed military source was quoted as saying in December that Russia had delivered anti-ship Yakhont missiles to Syria.

Earthquake hits northeast Iran, 100 injured (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? About 100 people were injured when an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit northeastern Iran on Thursday, state television reported.

The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 4:05 p.m., was 10 km (6 miles) outside the city of Neyshabur, some 70 km from the holy city of Mashhad, the official IRNA news agency said.

There had so far been 36 aftershocks since the main quake, IRNA said, adding that some buildings had been damaged and windows shattered in villages near Neyshabur.

"So far 100 people have been injured. Most of them were treated quickly and some have been hospitalized," state television quoted a local official as saying, adding that rescue workers were in the area.

The news agency ILNA reported that the quake lasted seven seconds and was the strongest felt in the region for 10 years.

Many parts of Iran are prone to earthquakes. At least seven people were killed in a 6.5-magnitude quake that jolted the southeast in 2010, the same region where a huge tremor killed some 31,000 people in the city of Bam in 2003.

This looks interesting, I think I'll be joining. But could I suggest something? Perhaps the writers and artists could have at least some differences in their powers in the universe they're in.

Congress revisiting bruising payroll tax cut fight

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With television lights glaring, 20 lawmakers will gather next week to revisit the fight that consumed Congress before Christmas over renewing a Social Security payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits.

Little real work will be done, but the meeting will mark the formal start of an effort to untangle a dispute that both parties want to resolve, though for different reasons. Following is a look at the path Round 2 could take, based on interviews with participants on both sides.

Q: Can you remind me what's at stake?

A: After a bitter clash and just a week before a New Year's Day deadline, President Barack Obama and Congress renewed a 2 percentage point payroll tax cut for 160 million workers and benefits for the long-term unemployed through February. They also temporarily forestalled a deep cut in doctors' Medicare fees that threatened to make it harder for the elderly to find physicians who would treat them. Now, the two sides need to figure out how to extend all three measures through 2012 and cover the roughly $160 billion cost.

Q: Are they expected to succeed?

A: Yes, though it will probably take until shortly before the current extensions expire Feb. 29. There are complicated decisions ahead, chiefly what programs to cut and what fees to increase to offset the price tag. Just as important, Democrats won't be in a hurry to finish.

Q: Why not?

A: Republicans took a severe pounding in December when the House GOP resisted a bipartisan, Senate-approved, two-month extension of the payroll tax cut, which was designed to give lawmakers time to negotiate a longer version. With control of the White House and Congress at stake in the November elections, many Democrats think the GOP could incur further damage if these latest talks take time.

Many Republicans doubt the economic benefit of a payroll tax cut, a foundation of Obama's plan to create jobs. But as December's battle unfolded, GOP leaders worried that they would suffer political damage from opposing the deeply popular tax cut, worth $1,000 annually to a family earning $50,000 a year.

With the House's fractious conservative wing balking until the very end, the fight made the GOP look like it was opposing the tax reduction ? which Democrats contrasted with Republican support for tax breaks for the wealthy. Most Republicans want this year's fight to end quickly so they can change the subject to their own efforts to cut taxes, federal spending and Obama administration regulations.

Q: How long can Democrats prolong the negotiations?

A: If they're not careful they could overplay their hand.

Democrats scored points last year by forcing Senate votes on their proposal to finance the payroll tax cut with a small surtax on people earning $1 million or more a year. They have a new incentive to do something similar this year with the GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney, a wealthy venture capitalist, being cast by party rivals as callous and out of touch.

As a result, many Democrats want to begin this year's talks on extending the Social Security tax cut by targeting the wealthy for a tax increase, perhaps with the millionaire surtax or by limiting their deductions. The millionaire surtax has no chance of passage in the GOP-run House, and Democrats could be accused of blatantly playing politics. Democrats and Obama have a reason to cut a deal: They believe extending the payroll tax cut and jobless benefits will goose the economy and reduce the risk of another economic downturn that could hurt their election prospects.

Q; What will the 20 members of Congress do?

A: House and Senate party leaders each have appointed bargainers to hash out differences over the bill, following Congress' tradition of naming conference committees to craft compromise legislation. But as usual when high-profile battles are being resolved, party leaders will have tight control over the ultimate deal. Still, conference committee members will play a role in writing details, and their endorsement of a package would let leaders argue that they didn't jam something down the throats of rank-and-file lawmakers.

Q: Who are these 20 lawmakers?

A: They range from formidable committee chairmen to lowly freshmen, but each has a stake in the fight.

The chairmen of Congress' two tax-writing committees are included: Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., of the House Ways and Means Committee, and Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., of the Senate Finance Committee.

Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., is the Senate's No. 2 Republican and a close ally of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Democratic Sen. Bob Casey, facing re-election this fall in the pivotal state of Pennsylvania, has repeatedly been given a visible role in the payroll tax fight by party leaders.

Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Calif., a party leader, should be a leading opponent of Republican proposals to help finance the plan by effectively denying the child tax credit to many illegal immigrants. Freshman GOP Rep. Nan Hayworth is from a closely contested district in New York's Hudson River Valley.

Hayworth and Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., are doctors, which could give them roles in the talks involving Medicare. A pair of Maryland Democrats, Sen. Ben Cardin and Rep. Chris Van Hollen, are sure to battle a Republican proposal to make federal employees contribute more to their pensions.

Q: Do they bring other experience to the bargaining table?

A: Seven have participated in recent, failed bipartisan efforts to contain mammoth budget deficits. Those were Congress' supercommittee, talks led by Vice President Joe Biden, the "Group of Six" senators, and a presidential commission headed by former Wyoming GOP Sen. Alan Simpson and former President Bill Clinton's White House chief of staff, Erskine Bowles.

None of those groups succeeded, largely because party leaders could not agree to the controversial tax increases and cuts in entitlement programs like Medicare that would have been required for the trillions of dollars in savings needed.

Far smaller savings are needed to resolve the payroll tax fight, and the consensus is that this time, the president and leaders in both parties want a package that can become law.

Outgoing Miss. Gov. Barbour pardons 4 killers (AP)

JACKSON, Miss. ? Outgoing Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour has pardoned at least four convicted killers who worked as inmate trusties at the Governor's Mansion, including a man who was denied parole less than two weeks ago.

Relatives of three victims told The Associated Press on Monday that state corrections officials notified them over the weekend that the convicts were to be released this past Sunday. Barbour, a Republican who weighed a presidential run last year before deciding against it, leaves office on Tuesday.

The pardons outraged victims' relatives. Democratic lawmakers called for an end to the custom of governors' issuing such end-of-tenure pardons

While Barbour's office hasn't responded to messages about the pardons, he told the AP in 2008 that releasing the trusties who live and work at the mansion is a tradition in Mississippi that goes back decades. Trusties are prisoners who earn privileges through good behavior.

The Barbour administration did not publicize the pardons, which became public when family members notified the media. The Mississippi Secretary of State's office released copies of the pardons Monday afternoon. They show Barbour has pardoned at least five men.

The former inmates are David Gatlin, convicted of killing his estranged wife in 1993; Joseph Ozment, convicted in 1994 of killing a man during a robbery; Anthony McCray, convicted in 2001 of killing his wife; Charles Hooker, sentenced to life in 1992 for murder; and Nathan Kern, sentenced to life in 1982 for burglary after at least two prior convictions.

Mississippi Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps said Monday afternoon that the inmates were released Sunday.

The 40-year-old Gatlin was sentenced to life in prison in the 1993 slaying of Tammy Ellis Gatlin and the shooting of Randy Walker, her long-time friend.

Walker's mother, Glenda Walker, said Monday that Gatlin shot his estranged wife while she was holding their young baby, then shot her son in the head.

"He left that little baby on his dead mother's body," Glenda Walker said. "It was a horrendous murder."

Randy Walker, who lives in Rankin County, said he voted for Barbour for governor in 2003 and 2007. Before Barbour's pardon of Gatlin, Walker said he would've supported Barbour for president, if Barbour had run.

"I'm totally disgusted," Walker said Monday. "I think Gov. Barbour at heart is a great man. I think he's done a lot of good for the state of Mississippi, but I think he's made a huge error here.... One man can't put you in jail. I don't think it's right for one man to remove you from jail."

Tiffany Ellis Brewer of Pearl, sister of Tammy Ellis Gatlin, said David Gatlin's release revived the grief for her family and Walker's family.

"It's liked it's happened all over again to us," Brewer said. "We can't do anything about our situation now because he's out, he's gone. But I don't want anyone in this world to feel the fear, the pain and the hurt that our families are feeling right now. Something needs to be done."

The Mississippi Parole Board turned down Gatlin on Dec. 27, according to a letter dated Jan. 4 and obtained by AP. The letter did not explain why the Parole Board rejected Gatlin's parole request. It said he was due for another parole hearing in October.

Shannon Warnock, chair of the parole board, didn't immediately respond to a message Monday.

Other victims' relatives said they were also shocked by Barbour's pardons.

Joann Martin, a probation officer from Fort Worth, Texas, said Anthony McCray killed her sister.

McCray pleaded guilty in 2001 to killing Jennifer Bonds McCray, 38, at Ramsey's Cafe in McComb. The couple apparently had been arguing before the shooting. He left the cafe and returned with a gun. Jennifer McCray was shot once in the back.

"It's very painful for my family that he was released. When he killed her, she had a 3-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old son, who have been raised by my other sister," Martin said. "It's a shame before God. It's almost like you kill somebody and nobody cares."

Democrats were quick to condemn the pardons, though past governors from both parties have granted some sort of early release to the inmates who lived and worked at the Governor's Mansion.

"Serving your sentence at the Governor's Mansion where you pour liquor, cook and clean should not earn a pardon for murder," Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley, a Democrat, posted Monday on his Facebook page.

Members of the Mississippi House Democratic Caucus held a press conference at the Mississippi Capitol Rotunda and called for limits on governors' ability to pardon inmates. They said they would introduce legislation this year.

Mark McAbee said Barbour pardoned the man who killed his uncle, Ricky Montgomery.

McAbee said Ozment was sentenced to life in 1994 for the slaying, which happened during a robbery with several other men.

"One of the other ones shot my uncle three times. He was crawling toward Joseph Ozment for help. He didn't know Joseph Ozment was involved. He was crawling to him for help. Joseph Ozment put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger twice," McAbee said.

He called the pardon "a slap in the face."

Barbour created a similar stir by releasing convicted killer Michael Graham in 2008. Barbour later defended "the custom" of governors reducing the sentences of the mansion's inmate workers if they behave.

Barbour's three predecessors, dating back to 1988, gave some type of early release or pardon to a total of 12 Governor's Mansion trusties. All but two of them had been convicted of murder. One was serving time for forgery and another for armed robbery and aggravated assault.

Epps, the corrections commissioner, told the AP in 2008 that the inmates who end up working at the Governor's Mansion are often convicted murderers because they are the ones who serve long enough sentences to build the trust needed for such a task.

Epps said Monday he wasn't taking a position on the practice of governors granting pardons, but pointed out that governors in Mississippi for decades have used their powers to let prisoners out early, including Governor's Mansion trusties convicted of serious crimes such as murder. He said he can't remember a case in which one of them committed another serious crime.

"I have sympathy and empathy for the victims," Epps said. "I've been a crime victim, but the point of the matter is this is just something that happens."

Sony Xperia ion coming to AT&T in Q2: offers 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 720p Reality display and dual HD cameras

AT&T and Sony Ericsson haven't exactly had the best of luck as Android partners -- we submit the Xperia Play 4G and the Xperia X10 as exhibits A and B -- but it appears that the two companies are blowing on the dice in Vegas and hoping that luck will change with their latest flagship. AT&T and Sony (that's right, not a hint of Ericsson in sight) took to the stage to announce the Xperia ion. It's packing some good specs, too: a 4.6-inch 1280 x 720 HD Reality display, a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, LTE, 16GB flash storage and a 12MP Exmor-R rear camera offering 1080p video capture that's paired up with a 1.3MP front-facing cam that offers 720p HD video. It'll also be Playstation-Certified, much like the Xperia Play before it.

The ion's gearing up for a Q2 release, but we were disappointed to learn that it's going to launch with Gingerbread installed, especially given the fact that Sony's been very forthcoming about upgrading its Xperia lineup to ICS by the end of the first quarter. We suspect the delay will be at least in part due to additional carrier testing. Granted, it's a long time away and things are subject to change. No pricing has yet been announced, but it's quite likely we'll see the feature-laden smartphone starting out around $250, if not more. We should have a hands-on shortly.

The Sweeper: Tottenham will hold imminent talks with London Mayor to discuss ?18m (?21.8m) 'take-it-or-leave-it' offer to fund new stadium

TIDYING UP ALL THE LOOSE STORIES IN FOOTBALL THIS WEEK

Tottenham will hold talks with London Mayor Boris Johnson, originally planned for next week, to discuss an ?18 million (?21.8m) ?final offer? from the public purse to fund the club?s planned stadium development, The Sweeper can disclose.

Johnson is scheduled to visit Haringey next Thursday to open an enterprise academy and has pencilled in a meeting with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy - although the timing has not yet been finalised - about the public sector contribution to the new White Hart Lane.

The Mayor is insistent that there will be no further negotiation on the ?18m offer, comprised of money from the Greater London Authority and Haringey, which has been on the table since last autumn.

The Sweeper understands that it is a ?take-it-or-leave-it? offer and that Johnson is now simply waiting to hear Spurs? answer. ?He is not willing to negotiate the figure anymore and is running out of patience,? one source said.

Levy told the AGM last month that Tottenham were now totally committed to building a new stadium at Northumberland Park, adjacent to the current ground, but he said that further public investment in the area from the Mayor, local government and Transport for London was crucial to making the project attractive to investors.

At the end of November, the club were given three weeks to accept Johnson?s offer but have extended the deadline and talks are now set to come to a head. ?

Tottenham insist they are still in ongoing discussions with the Mayor?s office and stress that any money from the government is not coming to the club but to regenerate the public transport and roads surrounding White Hart Lane in what is one of London?s most deprived boroughs.

Levy and the Spurs board are concerned that land values fell following last summer?s riots and this has made the area a greater risk for private investors as the club try to fund the ?460m (?558m) project.

Johnson has said that he wants Tottenham to stay in Haringey and develop the new stadium but the money will be spent elsewhere in the borough if his offer is not accepted.

Spurs are seeking a mix of sponsorship, naming rights and bank finance to raise more than ?300m (?363.9m) in construction costs, and the directors said at the AGM that de-listing the club from the Stock Exchange was crucial to raising the funding.

As The Sweeper revealed last month, the Premier League high-fliers have held tentative discussions with six to eight potential naming rights partners, including Qatar Airways, which is part-owned by the government of Qatar.

ARSENAL SET TO PAY ?434,000 (?526.5k) TOWARDS HENRY LOAN

Thierry Henry'
s short-term loan at Arsenal has been warmly greeted by supporters ? but it has also eased some pressure at his club, New York Red Bulls.

The biggest spenders in MLS have gone for broke to win silverware in recent seasons but there is not expected to be the same budget this year for players and salaries.

It was not only for magnanimous reasons that the Red Bulls granted Henry?s wish for a second coming at the club where he established his global reputation. They will also make much-needed financial savings, which will free up some cash for the current recruitment draft.

The Sweeper understands that the Red Bulls will save ?434,000 if Henry remains at Arsenal for the seven weeks for which that the Premier League club are hoping.

The Frenchman earns $10million-a-year (?7.9m) at the MLS club, half of which is paid for by the franchise and the other half by title sponsor Red Bull. This means that Arsenal?s commitment will be to pay ?62,000-a-week (?75.2k) during his current spell, which will be regarded as shrewd business should he show flickers of the form of his formidable peak.

TRIAL FOR FA AS CHIEFS MONITOR REDKNAPP CASE

Speculation
that Harry Redknapp will be installed as England manager after Euro 2012 has intensified in recent weeks as his Tottenham team emerge as possible title challengers.

The Spurs boss is the clear favourite with most bookmakers to replace Fabio Capello, with some having him as short as evens to follow the Italian.

Nevertheless, The Sweeper understands that the FA will be keeping a particularly close eye on Redknapp?s forthcoming trial for tax evasion, which begins on January 23 and is expected to last for two weeks.

Should Redknapp?s reputation be tarnished during the court case then it could prompt a sea change in the governing body?s post-Euro 2012 plans.

LIVERPOOL TOLD TO PAY ?1.8M (?2.2m) FOR RED BULLS STRIKER

Juan
Agudelo, the rising star of American football, spent two weeks at Liverpool before Christmas training with Kenny Dalgish?s team, where he made a good impression on the coaching staff.

The Sweeper understands that if Liverpool or any other suitors want to prise the 19-year-old striker from the MLS, they will have to match New York Red Bulls? ?1.8m (?2.2m) valuation of the teenager, who has already won 15 caps for the USA.

MLS rules dictate that only a third of the cash from the sale would go to his franchise to finance further player investment. A third has to be ploughed back into the franchise?s academy and the other third would go to MLS itself.

Asia stocks down as euro debt woes multiply (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stock markets faltered Friday amid worries over the health of Europe's banks and fears that the continent's debt crisis might be spreading beyond a handful of small economies.

Japan's Nikkei 225 Index fell 1 percent to 8,401.32. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 1.4 percent at 18,556.38. South Korea's Kospi fell 1.6 percent to 1,834.70.

Benchmarks in mainland China, Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia also fell.

Investment sentiment soured Thursday after Europe ? which dominated so many of 2011's financial headlines ? became a concern again.

Trading in UniCredit, a large Italian bank, was halted after the stock lost a quarter of its value. The bank said Wednesday that it would need to offer huge discounts to investors to raise money.

And a financial crisis deepened in Hungary, which had to pay a staggeringly high interest rate of 10 percent on its 12-month debt. That is far above the 7 percent level that forced Greece and Portugal to seek bailouts.

Taken together, the news raised fears that Europe's debt crisis would spread from small countries such as Greece and infect much larger ones such as Italy that are too big to be bailed out.

In the U.S. on Thursday, investors were encouraged by a report on the U.S. job market. Weekly unemployment claims declined again, one day before a crucial report on the national jobs picture in December.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average had a tiny decline to end at 12,415.70. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.3 percent to close at 1,281.06. The tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 2.5 percent to 2,669.86.

Benchmark oil for February delivery fell 40 cents to $101.38 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell by $1.41 to end Thursday at $101.81 in New York.

In currency trading, the euro rose to $1.2795 from $1.2782 late Thursday in New York. The dollar was steady at 77.18 yen.

'Descendants,' 'Bridesmaids' earn writers noms (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? George Clooney's "The Descendants," Brad Pitt's "Moneyball," Kristen Wiig's "Bridesmaids" and Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" are among nominees for the Writers Guild of America Awards.

Clooney's family drama "The Descendants" earned an adapted-screenplay nomination Thursday for director Alexander Payne and co-writers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. Pitt's sports tale "Moneyball" is up for the same prize for writers Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin.

Zaillian has a second adapted-screenplay nomination for director David Fincher's thriller "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.

"Bridesmaids" star Wiig shared an original-screenplay nomination for her wedding comedy, which she co-wrote with Annie Mumolo. Director Allen also was nominated for original screenplay for his romantic fantasy "Midnight in Paris."

Other contenders for original screenplay: Will Reiser for the cancer story "50/50," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen; Tom McCarthy for the family tale "Win Win," featuring Paul Giamatti; and Diablo Cody for the dark comedy "Young Adult," with Charlize Theron.

Also nominated for adapted screenplay: writer-director Tate Taylor for the Deep South drama "The Help," with Viola Davis, Emma Stone and Octavia Spencer; and John Logan for filmmaker Martin Scorsese's Paris adventure "Hugo," featuring Ben Kingsley and child stars Chloe Grace Moretz and Asa Butterfield.

Some acclaimed films, including the silent movie "The Artist," were ineligible because they were not made under the guild's contract guidelines.

Nominated for documentary screenplay: Katie Galloway and Kelly Duane de la Vega, "Better This World"; Marshall Curry and Matthew Hamachek, "If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front"; Patricio Guzman, "Nostalgia for the Light"; Wim Wenders, "Pina"; Hetty Naaijkens-Retel Helmrich and Leonard Retel Helmrich, "Position Among the Stars"; and Manish Pandey, "Senna."

Honors from Hollywood trade groups such as the writers, actors and directors guilds help sort out likely contenders for the Academy Awards, whose nominations come out Jan. 24.

Writers Guild winners will be announced Feb. 19.

Nikon announces D4 DSLR camera: full-frame 16.2 MP sensor, 204,000 extended ISO, $6,000 price tag

More than two years after the D3S began shipping and roughly a half-decade after we first got a peek at the D3, Nikon has finally announced the full-frame DSLR's long-awaited successor. As expected, the Nikon D4 boosts both megapixel rating (to 16.2) and extended ISO (204,800 at Hi-4), and includes a brand new full-frame FX-format sensor. Video capture also jumped from 720/24p to 1080/30p, but so did the camera's somewhat-out-of-reach price tag -- you'll be dropping $5,999.95 when the D4 hits stores in late February. You're clearly not spending all that hard-earned photo dough for nothing, though. There's also a 91k-pixel RGB 3D Color Matrix Meter III, compared to a 1,005-pixel meter in the D3S, enabling the camera to evaluate the color and brightness of a scene with much greater precision, yielding much more accurate results. And since the D4 reportedly offers phenomenal low-light performance, you'll probably be using it quite often in the dark -- letting you get good use out of the new back-lit controls.

Photographers can preview images using the 921k-dot 3.2-inch LCD, which offers a 170-degree viewing angle and ambient light sensor. HD video can be previewed on the display as well, or directly through the HDMI port, which also supports uncompressed 8-bit preview video output with optional overlay. Naturally, the D4 is fast. It can power on and be ready to shoot in approximately 0.012 seconds, and can capture 10 fps stills at full resolution with full auto focus and exposure. Willing to lock both AF and AE? The D4 goes to 11. A new 51-point AF system offers full cross-type focusing that's compatible with all Nikon lenses, even when paired with a teleconverter. The D4 includes two card slots with support for both UDMA-7 CF and the recently-announced XQD format, which brings write speeds of up to 125 MB/s -- enough to capture 105 consecutive RAW images at 10 fps. You'll find full details and specs on the D4 just past the break, along with an overview of Nikon's new AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G FX-format lens, which is set to ship in March for $499.95.

Kanye West's 3-hour Twitter rant: 'The adrenaline is running'

kanye-west-gi.jpgOn Wednesday (Jan. 4), Kanye West -- who'd been somewhat absent from Twitter of late -- embarked on a marathon session of tweets that covered much territory -- from his new design company to his thoughts on "London riots" and "Chicago murders."

"The adrenaline is running," tweets West. "I don't know if I can even get to sleep now."

West sent several 140-character missives about Donda, the new design company he's establishing named after his late mother, Donda West.

Donda will, he tweets, "pick up where Steve Jobs left off." He also added that the company is releasing a "semi sci-fi film" in 2012 and that he may become creative director of a "Jetsons" film. West also expressed an interest in designing an upcoming MTV Video Music Awards. (Hey, if you can't win 'em, may as well be involved somehow.)

"I know this is not a very rapper thing to say but I haven't bought a new car or piece of jewelry in about 2 years," he adds.

He also condemned the American educational system, tweeting, "Help education. School systems were designed to turn people into factory workers." He went on to suggest that kids be encouraged to use iPhones in school, not punished. He also details months he spent working undercover at Fendi and the Giuseppe Zanotti factory learning to design women's shoes.

Gay nativity scene vandalized at Southern California church

LOS ANGELES - An unusual nativity display at a Claremont church that conveyed a gay couple was vandalized over the weekend in an incident authorities are investigating as a hate crime.

Claremont United Methodist Church has a Christmas tradition of unusual nativity displays, intended to carry a social or political message.

Despite some of the controversial topics, the scenes had never been vandalized or defaced, according to church officials and John Zachary, the artist who created the scenes.

But this year, suspects vandalized a nativity scene that included wooden light boxes with three couples holding hands - a man and a woman, two women and two men - under a star of Bethlehem and a sign that said "Christ is Born."

Church officials came in before the Christmas morning service to find that someone had pushed over the two gay couples and left the heterosexual couple standing.

The vandalism occurred sometime between 11 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 9 a.m. on Christmas Day, police said. No suspects have been identified.

The church has never shied away from controversial topics, including a scene of war in the Middle East, a mother and baby in prison and a depiction of the U.S./Mexico border fence.

One year, the nativity depicted a homeless family. The scene prompted an impromptu outpouring of giving, with congregation members leaving donations of food, clothing and money.

"Christ?s birth in a stable had a lot to do with poverty and being marginalized," said Pastor Sharon J. Rhodes-Wickett. "What this church has tried to do through these scenes is say, ?What would that look like today??"

In 1993, the church made a decision to be a "reconciling congregation" which welcomes gay, lesbian and trasngender members. This year?s nativity display was intended to convey that message, Rhodes-Wickett said.

Ed Kania, 60, an openly gay member of the church, called the act of vandalism disappointing, especially because Claremont is a generally progressive college town.

"It?s a reminder that although there are pockets of acceptance, not everybody is accepting," he said. "We?re all kind of disappointed, but we?re using it as a rallying point."
