Wyandotte Film Festival to Include Troy Filmmaker - Troy, MI Patch

The first-ever Downriver Detroit Underground Festival of Films will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday at the James R.?DeSana?Center for Arts & Culture (Wyandotte Arts Center).

Headlining will be the world premiere of three short films written and produced by award-winning local independent filmmaker and Wyandotte police detective Scott Galeski.

Galeski?s production company, Ring of Fire Entertainment, which he co-founded with his brother, Daniel Galeski Jr., is sponsoring the festival. The Ring of Fire films debuting will be Taking Back the City, Bone Yard and Whiskey Tango.

Several other independent filmmakers from the metropolitan Detroit area have been invited to show their short films, as well, including Blake O. Kleiner of Troy.?The run time of each will be between five and 25 minutes.

After each film, Galeski said, the director and cast will come on stage and the audience will have a chance to ask questions and correspond with those involved.

Among the many films will be Spill Baby Spill by Bryan D. Hopkins of Riverview and Nutshell by Daniel D. Smith of Woodhaven.

About a year ago, Galeski held a world premiere party at the same Wyandotte venue for the short film The Tank II. In 2010, he held premieres for The Tank and Protangeline at the Trenton Village Theater.

Each film has gone on to win multiple awards on the independent film circuit, being shown in cities such as Royal Oak, Birmingham, Port Huron and Detroit.

Despite his success in other areas, Galeski said, he wants to maintain a strong connection to the Downriver area every step of the way in his filmmaking process.

?We remember where we came from,? he said. ?We always want to premiere our new stuff here. We want to promote it here. We?re proud to be from Downriver and we want to keep it here.?

Galeski typically uses local people to act in his films and shoots at many Downriver locations. Wyandotte Municipal Services IT Director David Fuller has appeared in both Tank movies, while The Rockery, Do Hickeys and the Wyandotte Police Station have all been used as filming locations.

Galeski?s first feature-length movie,?Pookerland, is currently in postproduction and is tentatively scheduled for a 2013 premiere in either late spring or early summer, he said. The movie will feature legendary Detroit rock and roll star Mitch Ryder.

Tickets for Saturday?s festival are $10 and are available by emailing?rofe1@yahoo.com. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show begins at 6 p.m.

Here is a full list of the short films that will be shown Saturday night:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A young model was either insane, or a calculating, quick-thinking murderer who feigned mental illness when he killed and castrated his lover, a prominent Portuguese journalist, in their New York hotel room last year, a jury heard on Wednesday. No one disputes that Renato Seabra, 22, killed Carlos Castro, 65, in January 2011. Seabra pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to a charge of second degree murder, and his trial reached closing arguments at Manhattan criminal court. ...

Giant black hole could upset galaxy evolution models

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A group of astronomers led by Remco van den Bosch from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) have discovered a black hole that could shake the foundations of current models of galaxy evolution. At 17 billion times the mass of the Sun, its mass is much greater than current models predict -- in particular since the surrounding galaxy is comparatively small. This could be the most massive black hole found to date.

To the best of our astronomical knowledge, almost every galaxy should contain in its central region what is called a supermassive black hole: a black hole with a mass between that of hundreds of thousands and billions of Suns. The best-studied super-massive black hole sits in the center of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, with a mass of about four million Suns.

For the masses of galaxies and their central black holes, an intriguing trend has emerged: a direct relationship between the mass of a galaxy's black hole and that of the galaxy's stars.

Typically, the black hole mass is a tiny fraction of the galaxy's total mass. But now a search led by Remco van den Bosch (MPIA) has discovered a massive black hole that could upset the accepted relationship between black hole mass and galaxy mass, which plays a key role in all current theories of galaxy evolution. The observations used the Hobby-Eberly Telescope and existing images from the Hubble Space Telescope.

With a mass 17 billion times that of the Sun, the newly discovered black hole in the center of the disk galaxy NGC 1277 might even be the biggest known black hole of all: the mass of the current record holder is estimated to lie between 6 and 37 billion solar masses (McConnell et al. 2011); if the true value lies towards the lower end of that range, NGC 1277 breaks the record. At the least, NGC 1277 harbors the second-biggest known black hole.

The big surprise is that the black hole mass for NGC 1277 amounts to 14% of the total galaxy mass, instead of usual values around 0,1%. This beats the old record by more than a factor 10. Astronomers would have expected a black hole of this size inside blob-like ("elliptical") galaxies ten times larger. Instead, this black hole sits inside a fairly small disk galaxy.

Is this surprisingly massive black hole a freak accident? Preliminary analysis of additional data suggests otherwise -- so far, the search has uncovered five additional galaxies that are comparatively small, yet, going by first estimates, seemed to harbor unusually large black holes too. More definite conclusions have to await detailed images of these galaxies.

If the additional candidates are confirmed, and there are indeed more black holes like this, astronomers will need to rethink fundamentally their models of galaxy evolution. In particular, they will need to look at the early universe: The galaxy hosting the new black hole appears to have formed more than 8 billion years ago, and does not appear to have changed much since then. Whatever created this giant black hole must have happened a long time ago.

Jon Gruden offered NFL ownership to become Tennessee's next football coach?

They call the college football coaching carousel the ?crazy season,? and they call it that with good reason: From the time the first coach is fired, straight up until the last one is hired, college football basically turns into one big high school cafeteria. Rumors all of a sudden become fact, innuendo becomes iron clad, and the only person?s word you can trust is? well, no one?s actually.

Still, as crazy as it gets, there is still the occasional rumor that is so far-fetched, so stunning, so gosh darn hard to believe, that everyone agrees on one thing: ?There?s no way that can be true.? ?

One of those rumors popped right after midnight on the East Coast Wednesday, involving the ex-NFL head coach of everyone?s dreams, Jon Gruden. It seems like just about every college program with an opening right now has their eye on Gruden, and each seems willing to top the last to get him.

Apparently though, the University of Tennessee has gone above and beyond everyone else, and has and not only offered Coach Chuckie the standard fare of cash, cars and women (well at least the first two, anyway), but also?

?are you ready for this?...

? Part ownership in an NFL team!!!!

It seems too crazy to be true, until you remember that one of Tennessee?s biggest boosters is a guy by the name of Jim Haslam, who also happens to be the owner of the Cleveland Browns. And apparently he wants Gruden so bad, he?s even willing to hand over a piece of Brown pie to get him.

The news was first reported by News Channel 3 in Memphis. Here?s their report:

Knoxville, TN-News Channel 3 has learned former NFL coach Jon Gruden has a contract offer in hand from the University of Tennessee and a decision could be made as early as Wednesday. Part of the offer is Gruden getting a piece of the NFL?s Cleveland Browns, who were recently bought by Jim Haslam, one of UT?s biggest boosters who played on the Vols? national championship teams in the early fifties. He?s also the father of Tennessee governor Bill Haslam. A potential hangup could be over money Gruden may be owed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from his stint as head coach there that ended in 2008. The NFL is looking into the conflict of owning part of one team while getting money from another. Gruden is currently working as an NFL analyst for ESPN. He started his coaching career in 1986 as a graduate assistant at Tennessee where he met his wife, a former UT cheerleader. Gruden?s two head coaching stints in the NFL were with Oakland and Tampa Bay. He coached the Bucs to a Super Bowl win in the 2002 season.

Again, this all seems to be too crazy to be true, until you start putting the puzzle pieces together.

Since it became clear a few weeks ago that Derek Dooley would no longer be back at Tennessee, Haslam?s name has come up as one of the big kingmakers in Knoxville. Haslam- whose son is actually the governor of Tennessee- might not have the clout to name the next head coach, but he did have the cash to lure a big name, such as Gruden?s to town.

Now we?ll see if Haslam is able to put his money where his mouth is.

If the report is true, Gruden should make some sort of final decision on Tennessee by Wednesday.

Our hunch?

Gruden is a lot more likely to be in the ESPN booth next season calling Browns games, then in the ownership box watching them.

Cossacks once again patrolling Moscow streets, ?We?re like Chuck Norris!?

Two Russian Cossacks, right, watch pedestrians passing by as they patrol a Moscow railway station (AP/Pavel Go??They've technically been around for centuries, but a small group of Cossacks recently returned to officially patrol the streets of Moscow.

We're like Chuck Norris!" Cossack patrol leader Igor Gulichev said, comparing his colleagues to the role made famous by Norris in the 1990's television sitcom "Walker, Texas Ranger."

According to the Russian 2010 census, some 650,000 citizens self-identified as Cossacks but only eight of the patrolman, originally heralded for their sword-fighting ability, have been selected to walk the streets of Moscow looking for beggars, drunks and illegally parked cars, according to the Associated Press.

But even as their modern role has shifted, the newly appointed Cossacks headed out to patrol in their traditional uniforms and fur hats. The AP says that along with actual crime fighting duties, the Kremlin hopes the return of the Cossacks will "promote conservative values and appeal to nationalists."

The political angle leads straight to the top of Russia's government. In 2005, Russian? President Vladimir Putin was inducted into the "Cossack Host," and bestowed the rank of Cossack colonel, a title once held by the country's imperial czars.

Gulichev said if his patrol passes this initial test they could eventually become armed and salaried auxiliary force. Currently, they are a volunteer force but do received free city bus passes.

An All-Russia Cossack Host with 400,000 members reporting directly to Putin will be launched by the end of the year.

And to those who point to their controversial past, which has included anti-Semitic, Catholic and Polish stances, Gulichey said the modern incarnation is no different than those famed Texas Rangers.

"They are just like Cossacks, and they work for the government, but they're welcomed with open arms," he said. "How come this should be allowed in America, but not in Russia, with our rich Cossack traditions?"

However, the first Cossack patrol did not yield substantial results. According to the AP, the patrol removed two elderly beggars, an unlicensed vendor selling socks and an old woman selling dried, wild mushrooms. The unlicensed vendor reportedly returned to his trading post shortly after the Cossacks departed.

Three good reasons why you should write an e-book now

Yes, you really should write an ebook as soon as you can. :-)

In this audio I give my three top reasons for writing ebooks:

Here?s a summary of those reasons:

1. It?s a wonderful feeling when you wake up in the morning and find not only have you sold an ebook in your sleep, but there?s money in your Paypal account too! Of course, you need a plan to make sure you sell more than just the one! But the first few times it happens it?s incredibly exciting.

2. It?s a way to start selling your time one-to-one and start selling products one-to-many instead. Yes, I know it?s almost a cliche now, but it really is true. You only have 24 hours a day, but if you package up what you know as an e-book or e-course (information product) then you can sell an almost unlimited number of them. E-books are your first step.

3. E-courses and online communities (membership sites) are usually far more lucrative than e-books, but it really is best to start with an e-book. An e-book is a simple to produce as converting a Word file to a PDF and there are simple, inexpensive shopping carts you can use to take payments.

Having said that, actually writing your first e-book can be tricky because you need to find the time to do it and you have to deal with all the self-doubt that gets in your way. Then you have to add the extra blurb, get a good-looking cover and weigh up whether you should sell from your own sit or sell on other sites (e.g. Amazon?s Kindle). Best to get that first e-book out of the way now because the others will be far easier!

You can read how I turned an e-book into an e-course here: My first e-course ? Earn What you Deserve as a Mumpreneur.

?If you?d like me to help you write your first e-book and get it up for sale, join me on Thursday for my ?Write Your First e-Book? webinar. Click here for more.
