Vt. lye victim gets new face at Boston hospital

BOSTON (AP) ? Loved ones knew it was her at the hospital when they saw her teeth.

Carmen Blandin Tarleton's face was unrecognizable after the lye attack, burned away in the frenzy of an estranged husband's rage.

Nearly six years later, the Vermont nurse is celebrating a gift that has given her a new image following a full facial transplant this month.

Doctors at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston said at a Wednesday news conference that the 44-year-old's surgery included transplanting a female donor's facial skin to Tarleton's neck, nose and lips, along with facial muscles, arteries and nerves.

"I know how truly blessed I am, and will have such a nice reflection in the mirror to remind myself what selfless really is," Tarleton wrote on her blog Wednesday.

She did not attend the news conference but watched it during a live web broadcast. The hospital said it was not releasing a current picture of her.

Tarleton's sister, Kesstan Blandin, shared a statement from Tarleton that said she felt "really good and happy."

"I want to convey to the donor's family what a great gift they have given to me," the statement said. "...I feel strong and I am confident that I have the strength to deal with whatever comes my way."

The Thetford, Vt., woman suffered burns on more than 80 percent of her body and was left blind after her attacker beat her with a baseball bat and doused her with the industrial strength chemical in June 2007.

Tarleton, who once worked as a transplant nurse, has undergone more than 50 surgeries since then. The operations included skin grafts and work that has restored vision to one eye.

The latest surgery took 15 hours and included a team of more than 30 medical professionals. The lead surgeon, Bohdan Pomahac, called her injuries among the worst he's seen in his career.

"Carmen is a fighter," the doctor said. "And fight she did."

Pomahac's team has performed five facial transplants at the hospital. He said his team's latest patient is recovering well and is in great spirits as she works to get stronger.

Before the transplant, Tarleton drooled constantly because of scar tissue in her mouth. She also couldn't turn her head from side to side or lift her chin.

Pomahac said Tarleton was pleased when she saw her new face for the first time. Her appearance will not match that of the late donor's face, he said.

"I think she looks amazing, but I'm biased," the surgeon said with a smile.

The donor's family wants to remain anonymous now, but released a statement through a regional donor bank saying that her spirit would live on through Tarleton and three other organ recipients.

In 2009, Tarleton's now ex-husband Herbert Rodgers pleaded guilty to maiming her in exchange for a prison sentence of at least 30 years.

Police previously said Rodgers believed his wife was seeing another man and went to her house to attack him. Tarleton mistook the intruder for a burglar at first and told him he could have whatever he wanted. Then Rodgers launched into a fury, fracturing one of Tarleton's eye sockets and breaking her arm with the bat.

He had brought lye with him in a squeeze bottle and he poured it on Tarleton.

When police arrived, the brunette's heart-shaped face already was distorted, her skin turning brown. She was trying to crawl into a shower to wash away the chemical.

But now, the mother of two daughters talks about forgiveness and has a newly-published book called "Overcome: Burned, Blinded and Blessed."

"Forgiveness is about helping ourselves, not the people who hurt us," read an image on a website Wednesday that promotes her book.

ICE: Official?s resignation not tied to detainees? releases

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) called an Associated Press report ?inaccurate and misleading,? in response to an article stating that Gary Mead, ?ICE?s Enforcement Director of Enforcement and Removal Operations, ?resigned shortly after the news that ICE had released immigrant detainees due to budget cuts.

?Gary Mead ? disclosed his departure in an email to his staff Tuesday afternoon. The announcement of the release of the illegal immigrants had come earlier in the day,? reported the AP, which also reported Mead did not give a reason for his departure in the e-mail and said he was leaving with ?mixed emotions.?

In a statement, Gillian Christensen, ICE Deputy Press Secretary, said the connection between Mead?s resignation and the detainees? release was not accurate. ??Gary Mead announced several weeks ago to ICE senior leadership that he planned to retire after 40 years in federal service and 6 years at ICE,? stated Christensen, adding, ?As planned, and as shared with ICE staff weeks ago, Mr. Mead will retire at the end of April.?

A few days ago ICE confirmed that hundreds of immigrant detainees who did not pose serious risks or criminal records were being released from different detention centers in several states.

RELATED: Release of ICE detainees shines spotlight on immigration debate?

In a statement, ICE said that??as fiscal uncertainty remains over the continuing resolution and possible sequestration, ICE has reviewed its detained population to ensure detention levels stay within ICE?s budget.? ?ICE?s Gillian Christensen stated that over the last week, it had reviewed several hundred cases and placed some individuals on methods of supervision which were less costly than detention.

Some immigrants rights groups said that releases of detainees should not come due to budget cuts. ??It shouldn?t take a manufactured crisis in Washington to prompt our immigration agencies to actually take steps towards using government resources wisely or keeping families together,? according to United We Dream?s Carolina Canizales.

Small Canadian satellite to hunt big space rocks

A suitcase-sized Canadian spacecraft launched Monday aboard an Indian rocket is designed to spot large asteroids that cross paths with our planet.

The Canadian Space Agency's Near-Earth Object Surveillance Satellite, or NEOSSat, will seek out and track huge space rocks orbiting the sun from its position in Earth orbit, its builders say. The satellite will also track space debris and satellites still in service in Earth's orbit, splitting time between its two missions.

"The project with the CSA is essentially to survey the sky and get the best, improved near-Earth asteroid population and the ones that can sometimes cross Earth orbit," said Denis Laurin, a CSA space astronomy program scientist working on the NEOSSat mission.

The $25 million NEOSSat spacecraft is about the size of a suitcase and destined to circle the Earth every 100 minutes in an orbit about 497 miles (800 kilometers) above the planet. [See how NEOSSat tracks asteroids (Video)]

NEOSSat is due to blast off atop an Indian Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle at 7:20 a.m. EST (1220 GMT) on Monday from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India. The PSLV rocket will also launch the larger SARAL ocean-monitoring satellite for the Indian Space Research Organisation and five other small spacecraft, including two tiny nanosatellites billed as the?world's smallest space telescopes.

One benefit to having NEOSSat in orbit and hunting for asteroids is that the satellite can survey the sky during Earth's night and daylight hours, Laurin added.

Most ground-based?asteroid mapping technologies?today require a dark sky, but a space telescope like NEOSSat doesn't depend upon the night sky. When searching from orbit, the satellite can survey parts of the sky close to the sun, a nearly impossible feat for ground telescopes, said William Harvey, a CSA senior project manager with NEOSSat.

NEOSSat will analyze the asteroids it monitors in great detail, giving scientists the chance to understand what the space rocks could be composed of and where their orbits take them, mission scientists said.

The small spacecraft isn't capable of catching relatively small space rocks like the Russian meteor that exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk on Feb. 15, or?asteroid 2012 DA14, a?130 foot (40 meters) rock?that buzzed close by Earth on that same day.

"NEOSSat will probably reduce the impact hazard from unknown large NEO's by a few percent over its lifetime, but is not designed to discover?small asteroids near the Earth?that may be on collision course," NEOSSat co-principal investigator Alan Hildebrand of the University of Calgary told SPACE.com.

Instead, the satellite aims to track Atira and Aten class space rocks ? asteroids that pass within Earth's orbit or occasionally cross the planet's orbit, Hildebrand added.

The asteroids NEOSSat will search for are at least 31 million miles (50 million kilometers) from Earth. The satellite will look slightly behind and in front of the Earth, as well as east and west of the sun to spot any asteroids far off in Earth's orbit.

"I'm hoping people will get interested in following up the NEOSSat mission with other missions. Maybe some of the?asteroids?will become candidates for future missions or mining," Harvey said. "They could be unmanned or other endeavors. It's a very interesting time. This could be the start of one of the next missions for humans."

NEOSSat's mission is part of the High Earth Orbit Surveillance System project by the Defence Research and Development Canada agency, which is a partner in the mission with CSA. It was built by Microsat Systems Canada, Inc., which also built the CSA's small MOST space telescope that launched in 2003.

You can watch the launch of NEOSSat live via?India's official Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle webcast.

Bernanke signals continued support for low rates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Ben Bernanke sent a message Tuesday to Congress: The Federal Reserve's low-interest-rate policies are giving crucial support to an economy still burdened by high unemployment.

The Fed chairman acknowledged the risks of keeping rates low indefinitely. But he expressed confidence that such risks pose little threat now.

Delivering the Fed's semiannual monetary report to Congress, Bernanke sought to minimize concerns that the central bank's easy-money policies might cause runaway inflation later or dangerous bubbles in assets like stocks. He sought to reassure sometimes-skeptical senators that the Fed is monitoring potential threats and can defuse them before they hurt the economy.

Several Fed policymakers said at their most recent meeting that the Fed might have to scale back its bond purchases because of the risks. Those comments, contained in minutes released last week, fanned speculation that the Fed might soon allow long-term borrowing rates to rise. Stock prices fell sharply.

But Bernanke gave no signal that the Fed might shift away from its low-interest-rate policy. He said its aggressive program to buy $85 billion a month in Treasurys and mortgage bonds had kept borrowing costs low. And that, in turn, has helped strengthen sectors such as housing and autos, he said.

On budget policy, Bernanke urged Congress to replace the automatic spending cuts due to start Friday with more gradual reductions in budget deficits in the short run. He noted that the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the automatic spending cuts that take effect Friday would shave growth by 0.6 percentage point this year.

"Congress and the administration should consider replacing the sharp, front-loaded spending cuts required by the sequestration with policies that reduce the federal deficit more gradually in the near term but more substantially in the longer run," Bernanke said.

Economists said Bernanke made clear the Fed has no plans to scale back its pace of bond purchases.

"That policy will continue to be supportive for growth, with no sign of imminent plans to scale down (the bond purchases) and certainly no plans to remove accommodation for a very long time," said Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics.

Addressing concerns that the bond purchases, which have pushed the Fed's balance sheet to a record high above $3 trillion, could trigger high inflation, Bernanke said:

"Inflation is currently subdued and inflation expectations appear well-anchored. We do not see the potential costs of the increased risk-taking in some financial markets as outweighing the benefits of promoting a stronger economic recovery and more-rapid job creation."

He said that over the past six months, the economy has grown moderately but unevenly. Bernanke said the pause in growth seen in the final three months of 2012 "does not appear to be a stalling-out of the recovery." He said growth appears to have picked up in the past two months.

Shortly before the Fed chairman spoke, several reports pointed to surprising economic strength: Americans' confidence in the economy rebounded this month, new-home sales jumped in January to the highest level since 2008, home prices rose at a healthy pace in December compared with a year ago and profits of U.S. banks jumped last quarter to the highest level in six years.

Bernanke was asked whether the Fed's bond buying could push its balance sheet to $4 trillion. He said that it has no target for how much in bonds it plans to buy.

He noted that the Fed's balance sheet is less than that of the Bank of Japan, which has battled for more than two decades to strengthen the sluggish Japanese economy.

Asked about possible threats to the U.S. economy from Europe's financial crisis, including new fears about Italy, Bernanke said that the exposure of American banks to Italy's debt was small.

He said a bigger threat could emerge if investors grew worried that the debt crisis might suddenly be worsening. He doesn't foresee such a threat, Bernanke said.

The publishing industry has a problem, and EPUB is not the solution ...

This article contains my personal views, not those of my employer Lonely Planet.

I?ll be blunt. Ebooks and EPUB are to the publishing industry what Blu-Ray is to the movie industry: a solution to yesterday?s problem made irrelevant by broader change in the industry. Both have a couple of years left in them, and there?s good money to be made while the kinks get worked out from the alternatives, but the way the wind is blowing is clear.

Whenever someone proposes EPUB as a solution, ask yourself a question: what?s the problem they?re trying to solve? As a standard drafted by the?IDPF, a self-proclaimed ?organization for the Digital Publishing Industry?, EPUB is built squarely to address the industry?s biggest headache: ensuring that, in the digital age, they retain the ability to charge money for distributing content. The best interests of authors or readers simply do not figure in the equation.

EPUB is thus built around the premise that ebooks should be just like physical books and Blu-Ray discs. You?re expected to buy a copy in a store, bring it home with you, read or watch it, and then keep it in your personal library. As far as publishers are concerned, the only difference (or, rather, threat) is that readers can copy ebooks too easily. Since this poses a risk to the venerable business model of selling individual copies, ebooks must be deliberately made defective through digital restrictions management ? regardless of the inconvenience posed to readers, who now find themselves trapped in a completely absurd, purely artificial maze of incompatible formats and geographical restrictions.

But all it takes to yank the carpet from underneath the house of cards is a change to one assumption: what if the book is free? You don?t need a shop to buy it from anymore, because you do not need to pay. You can make all the copies you want, since there is no revenue to be lost. In fact, you no longer even need to take home and hoard your own precious copy, because you can grab one whenever you want, chuck it out when you?re done and get another one later if fancy strikes.

From a publishing industry viewpoint, that?s pure crazy talk, because it demolishes their current business model. But from a web point of view, it?s the way things are expected to work, and it?s in fact precisely how you?re reading this article. As an author on the Web, I have access to a huge range of tools to get my content out there, actively worked on in a massive developer community, and an entire spectrum of ways to try to make money if I so choose. And as a reader, the Web gives me unfettered access to a vast amount of things to read, and I can read them on the latest, shiniest browser out there.

Compare this with EPUB, which?cannot be created without specialised tools and knowledge and?cannot be read out of the box on any major browser. Existing implementations for writing and displaying EPUB are immature?and widely loathed by developers, who will not touch it unless they happen to work for a publisher that forces them to. As a casual datapoint, a search through my (publishing-biased) LinkedIn network finds 4,900 people who claim enough knowledge of EPUB to put it on their profiles, compared to 110,000 for HTML5 and an incredible 1,400,000 for plain HTML. While EPUB 3?s decision to inhale the ever-evolving HTML5 standard wholesale is probably the lesser evil compared to futilely attempting to lock it down, the sheer disparity in these numbers also means that it is doomed to playing an endless game of catch-up, while the open Web races ahead. IDPF?s wish for EPUB to someday become ?the portable document format for the Open Web? may be sincere, but for the time being, is anybody?actually using it?for anything beyond ebooks?

EPUB?s second advantage from a publisher?s point of view is that, by imposing a straitjacket of strict XHTML on the book?s contents and pruning away some of the wilder excesses of raw HTML, it has made it somewhat easier to reproduce ebooks reliably on single-purpose ebook reading devices that lack the oomph to run a full-fledged browser. However, Moore?s law means that ever-cheaper, ever-faster multipurpose tablets with browsers that can handle anything thrown at them are becoming more popular by the day. On the other side of the equation, the aforementioned decision to adopt the full bloat of HTML5 means that full EPUB compliance will actually be?harder?than merely supporting the Internet at wide. (From personal experience, I can tell you that mapping a pinpoint onto a map or flowing text into two columns, both trivial exercises in modern browsers, are virtually impossible to implement portably in EPUB 3.)?Even?EPUB 2 is a standard only on paper: Lonely Planet is currently forced to produce three different flavours of EPUB 2, each targeted at different vendors, plus KF8 for the uncooperative thousand-pound gorilla of the market, Amazon?s EPUB-hating Kindle.

The final advantage often ascribed to EPUB is that it serves as a handy package for everything beyond the text: it offers a clear structure for including images and other media, and?it?defines a clear way for specifying metadata like a table of contents and publication dates. Technologically, none of these is a unique advantage: both?vector?and?raster?images can be embedded directly in HTML,?the?meta tag?has been around since the dawn of HTML, and the?document outline semantics?needed to reliably build a table of contents have been a part of the HTML5 standard for a while now and are supported to varying but ever-increasing degrees by modern browsers.

The inescapable conclusion is that, within a few years,?EPUB will offer no benefits over existing solutions. Do you wish to reproduce a paper document with perfect fidelity? ?PDF cracked that nut years ago. Do you want to distribute a standalone written document, like a report or a novel, in a format that readily adapts itself to any device? ?HTML is the way to go. And if you?re publishing a complex, interactive, data-driven and thus ever-changing website, EPUB doesn?t even try to fit the bill.

Award recipient shares Jobs' philosophy | UWIRE

?Smart people are a dime a dozen; what really matters is being able to think imaginatively, to think creatively,? Walter Isaacson said. | Mary Dahdouh/The Daily Cougar

Steve Jobs had begun to see a connection between Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein and himself, said biographer Walter Isaacson on Friday at the Farfel Distinguished Lecture.

?I got a phone call from (Jobs) ? and I had written about Benjamin Franklin, was just about to come out with the biography of Albert Einstein ? and Steve talked to me and asked, ?Why not do me next??? Isaacson said.

?Of course my first reactions was ?OK, Ben Franklin, Albert Einstein (and) Steve Jobs?,? and I told him ?Your humility hasn?t fully deepened since we first met? but after a while I realized, especially when he was sick and battling cancer, that he was a person who had transformed seven industries in America.?

Isaacson, president and CEO of the Aspen Institute as well as former CEO of CNN and editor of Time Magazine, was honored as the 2013 Farfel Distinguished Lecture speaker.

The Farfel Distinguished Lectureship is UH?s most prestigious award that honors the leadership of Aaron Farfel, who served on the UH System Board of Regents for 16 years.

?The process of selecting the speaker for the Farfel lecture is one that engages a number of people in the University. We really want it to be something that enlightens individuals and creates conversation about a topic that maybe people aren?t discussing as much as we would like,? said Karen Clarke, associate vice president of marketing and communication and associate vice chancellor of marketing and communication for the UH System.

?(Isaacson) is a great story teller. There are a lot of academics who have evocative ideas, but it?s difficult for them to engage a larger group in those concepts and ideas. One thing that we liked best about Isaacson was that he is clearly able to tell a story and give analogies and things like that, which really draw you in so you learn a lesson and get the point in a way that?s memorable,? Clarke said.

Throughout the lecture, Isaacson continually told heartfelt stories about Jobs, as well as Franklin and Einstein, which truly brought together the minds of all three men to focus on intellectual creativity.?Some were perplexed by the connection Isaacson made between the three men, but many agreed.

?You absolutely can?t go anywhere in America without seeing an Apple product somewhere,? said chemistry junior Camden Kirkland. ?The man literally revolutionized how computing and technology are used in both America and the world.?

Jobs? endless passion for pursuing perfection and his motivation for pushing past boundaries were as widespread as his products, Isaacson said. This passion of his was expressed in one of Jobs? favorite sayings, ?Don?t be afraid. You can do it.?

Jobs, alongside Franklin and Einstein, has revolutionized the world in some way through his ingenuity.

?I realized that there was a common thread between Steve and my original two: Franklin and Einstein. That common thread was imagination and creativity,? Isaacson said. ?Smart people are a dime a dozen; what really matters is being able to think imaginatively, to think creatively.?

With that common thread established, Isaacson concluded by explaining Jobs? beliefs on simple beauty.

When Jobs looked at the first iPod, he questioned the necessity of an on and off switch, Isaacson said.

?And it dawned on me that they don?t need it: If you stopped using your iPod for long enough, it powered down and when you started using it again, it powered itself up. It was the beauty in simplicity that he saw,? Isaacson said.

Isaacson provided insight to the philosophical side of Jobs, one that was suitably demonstrated through a technological medium.

?I said to him, ?Do you still believe in the spirit of life? Do you believe that something lives on?? and he said, ?Yeah, I like to believe that, but then sometimes I?m just a little bit afraid that it?s just like an on and off switch ? when you die, you just click off and you?re gone,?? Isaacson said.

?I was somewhat taken aback, then he gave me that little half smile he had, then he said ?Maybe that?s why I didn?t like putting on/off switches on Apple devices,?? Isaacson said.

Republican Senator McCain says Hagel "not qualified" as defense secretary

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Senator John McCain on Sunday said his former colleague Chuck Hagel was not qualified to be U.S. defense secretary but the Senate would likely vote on his nomination rather than hold it up with procedural hurdles.

Before going on a weeklong recess, Republican lawmakers succeeded in delaying a Senate vote on Hagel's nomination earlier this month. Hagel is expected to win confirmation if a vote is held because Democrats control 55 votes in the 100-seat Senate.

"I do not believe that Chuck Hagel, who is a friend of mine, is qualified to be secretary of defense," McCain of Arizona said on CNN's "State of the Union" show.

"I believe that when the questions are answered, and I believe they will be by this coming week that the president deserves an up or down vote" on Hagel, said McCain, who is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Hagel's nomination was likely to go for a vote in the Senate "barring some additional revelation," he said.

Hagel, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, angered Republicans when as senator he broke from his party by opposing former President George W. Bush's handling of the Iraq war.

Republicans are demanding more information from the administration related to the attacks on U.S. facilities in Benghazi, Libya, last year.

The Senate confirmation vote on John Brennan for CIA director also faces delay over the request by Republicans for more information related to Benghazi.

"I don't want to put a hold on anybody, but the American people deserve answers about Benghazi. There are so many questions that are still out there, including what was the president doing the night Benghazi happened?" McCain said.

Insert Coin semifinalist: smARtPULSE is a hackable Bluetooth oximeter

Insert Coin semifinalist smARtPULSE

Oximeters aren't exactly the sexiest gadgets in the world, but they're definitely quite useful. Monitoring pulse and blood oxygen levels are important for patients in hospitals, athletes trying to squeeze every last drop of performance from their body and anyone making a sudden trip to high altitudes. smARtPULSE uses pretty standard photodetection technology for tracking oxygen levels, but its ability to tether to a whole host of other devices via Bluetooth 4.0 is what really sets it apart. There are free Android and iOS apps for those that just want to check their vitals and be done with it, but tinkerers can have a field day with the open-source hardware and upcoming API. At the end of the day, connecting the smARtPULSE to any computer (be it Linux, Windows or OS X) will be pretty simple, and there will even be libraries available for Arduino, Raspberry Pi and Electric Imp. With the prototyping out of the way, now the team is finishing up the API and ironing out the final design.

Check out the full list of Insert Coin: New Challengers semifinalists here -- and don't forget to pick a winner!

A secure place to store your scalding coffee so you can concentrate on driving and put both hands on the wheel isn't a convenience—it's a safety feature. And it wasn't even standard on cars until the 1980's. More »

Mardi Gras Indian Super Sunday 2013 parade

For the uninitiated visitor, we?ll break it down: Super Sunday is the day when tribes of Mardi Gras Indians from across New Orleans don their newest suits and take to the streets to show off these elaborate, wearable works of art handmade with beads, feathers, rhinestones and sequins, challenging Indian chiefs from other tribes over whose suit is the ?prettiest? (the highest compliment for these masterpieces).

The annual Super Sunday parade hosted by the New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian Council will take place on Sunday, March 17, 2013, with tribes gathering at A.L. Davis Park at Washington & LaSalle Streets around 12 noon.

After Mardi Gras, Super Sunday and St. Joseph?s night (March 19) are the only other times of year when New Orleans? famous Mardi Gras Indians roam the streets in full regalia. Parading on St. Joseph?s night has been a Mardi Gras Indian tradition in New Orleans for more than a century, and Super Sunday always falls on the Sunday closest to St. Joseph?s. Few agree about the connection between the Italian celebration of St. Joseph?s day and the Indians? Super Sunday ? opinions vary even among Indian chiefs.

Where can I find Mardi Gras Indians on Super Sunday?
Super Sunday music and activities?start around 12 noon at A.L. Davis Park (Washington/LaSalle Streets).

Parade route: A.L. Davis Park at Washington Avenue and LaSalle Street ? LaSalle to Simon Bolivar. Left on Martin Luther King Boulevard to S. Claiborne Avenue. Left on Claiborne Avenue to Washington Avenue. Left on Washington Avenue. End: A.L. Davis Park

Where can I find Mardi Gras Indians on St. Joseph?s Night?
Indians parading on St. Joseph?s night are more difficult to track down. Indians as a rule parade without a designated route, except on Super Sunday. In general, Uptown Indians parade around the Central City area and Downtown Indians stick to the Seventh Ward area. For locals, searching for the Indians is considered part of the fun of the experience; finding them is the reward!

Dead in the Water

Mmm ... water. Now that's refreshing! Mmm ... water. Now that's refreshing!

The body of a Canadian tourist was discovered in a water tank on top of a Los Angeles hotel on Tuesday. Local health officials have ordered people not to drink the hotel?s water (though tests indicate that the water did not contain harmful bacteria). Would drinking corpse water make you sick?

Not necessarily. If the body belonged to a generally healthy person, you might get sick from E. coli or another coliform bacteria from the deceased?s intestine. But that?s unlikely. Most bacteria don?t survive long outside of the living human body, so pathogens would probably die in the water before they could do you any harm. Bacteria also thrive only within a certain temperature range, so hot or cold weather could hamper their spread, too. (A representative of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health told NBC that a cold spell may have prevented the spread of bacteria in this particular case.) And since drinking water is treated with chlorine or other disinfectants for the express purpose of killing harmful fecal bacteria, dangerous germs have an even smaller chance of survival in a water tank than in, say, a lake.

However, coliform bacteria, which occur naturally in healthy people?s lower intestinal tract and feces, could conceivably diffuse through the water and survive long enough to make you sick. When ingested, coliform bacteria can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal symptoms, but they?re treatable with antibiotics.

If the body belonged to someone with an infectious disease, you might be in trouble. Hepatitis A, tuberculosis, cholera, and some bacteria that cause pneumonia can be spread through water, for instance. Some infectious bacteria, viruses, and parasites are chlorine-resistant, which makes them more dangerous in the water supply than coliform bacteria.

People who drink or bathe with water that?s been contaminated by a corpse are more likely to experience psychological effects than physical illness. Learning that you?ve inadvertently been in such indirect yet intimate contact with a dead body could be traumatic, and it may cause anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder, both of which are treatable with psychotherapy or antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication.

Nokia production follies still hindering Lumia 920, Lumia 620 sales

DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend, "Doug" (24), and I (22) have been in a long-distance relationship for a year, but we were friends for a couple of years before that. I had never had a serious relationship before and lacked experience. Doug has not only been in two other long-term relationships, but has had sex with more than 15 women. One of them is an amateur porn actress.I knew about this, but it didn't bother me until recently. Doug had a party, and while he was drunk he told one of his buddies -- in front of me -- that he should watch a certain porn film starring his ex-girlfriend. ...

Twitter lets others sell 'Promoted Tweets'

Twitter Inc. took a big step toward making the big money its investors expect Wednesday by opening up its micro-blogging platform to third party sales of advertising, initially by a select group of five companies.

San Francisco-based Twitter first began selling "Promoted Tweets" -- advertiser messages that appear users' content streams -- in 2010.

The outside companies it has initially designated to manage ad campaigns are Adobe, HootSuite, Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM), SHIFT and TBG Digital. More will follow, according to a blog post by April Underwood, a Twitter product manager for revenue.

E-commerce experts tackle drinks retail - The Drinks Business

31DoverWith a background in online work for John Lewis, BT and his own recently sold spare parts site, eSpares, David Laurie, the co-founder and CEO of 31Dover has set up this latest venture in partnership with London-based luxury drinks retailer Vanquish Wine.

Highlighting the opportunity he believes he has identified, Laurie told the drinks business: ?We?re trying to take people who are completely mystified by supermarket shelves or the selection criteria of our competitors. We?re helping our customers to make a choice ? and the right choice.?

In order to achieve this, he pointed to 31Dover?s ?very rich, content led site?, which features video tips, a virtual barman and cocktail recipes.

Despite these features, Laurie emphasised a focus on simplicity. ?People just want to get from A to B clearly and crisply and to be able to check out,? he remarked of the e-commerce sector in general. ?They don?t want to engage in a whole dialogue.?

However, he added: ?If over time you can prove yourself, then you can start having a conversation with them.?

Turning to 31Dover?s relatively concise selection of around 100 wines, Laurie noted the retailer?s next day delivery service as he explained: ?We?re streamlining for logistical purposes as well as helping people to choose. The theory behind our wine list is that it?s like going to a decent restaurant ? it?s a list instead of just thousands of wines.?

Wine buyer Peter Hogarth, who has previously worked for Berry Bros. & Rudd, Harrod?s, Oddbins and Wholefoods, currently works with around 10 suppliers, although some wines are shipped directly from the producer. ?Once we have the volumes we?ll do more of that,? he remarked

Summing up the range as offering ?A more interesting selection than a supermarket without trying to take on the independent who can hand sell,? Hogarth argued: ?Wine is always presented in quite a staid, boring fashion.? As a result, he emphasised: ?Our descriptions are trying to be straightforward and concise. I don?t mention any fruit flavours or technical jargon.?

Although noting that the wine selection avoided the cheapest end of the market, just as 31Dover is not positioning itself as a fine wine merchant, Hogarth observed:? ?Because we?re online we can have lower margins so we can give better value than ?bricks and mortar?.?

Despite being an online business, Hogarth also stressed 31Dover?s commitment to offering a human face and product knowledge. ?People are available on the phone and we have in house expertise ? that?s what I?m here for,? he remarked.

Since it started trading at the beginning of January, 31Dover has built up a customer base across the UK through a combination of Pay Per Click (PPC) web advertising, working with brand ambassadors and especially word of mouth, which Laurie noted: ?particularly for a UK audience is very important.?

Hogarth described the first three months? trading as an important time for learning about customer shopping habits, from how they search for products to the styles that have most appeal.

?What are people searching for: is it Sancerre or Sauvignon Blanc?? he queried, adding: ?We?re still working on our search terms to narrow the selection.?

On the spirits side of the business, Laurie revealed some early observations about customer habits. ?People go for their vodka and stick to what they know, but for gin there?s more research and interest ? we feel the enthusiasm through their journey.?

Anticipating that this demand would gradually become better reflected in 31Dover?s spirits offer, Laurie noted: ?What you?ll see over time is more artisan products. There are some great young brands kicking around that deserve a nationwide audience.?

He also outlined the mutual benefits to the partnership with Vanquish Wine, which currently supplies much of 31Dover?s spirit and Champagne portfolio as well as providing its London address for the company?s name.

In return, remarked Laurie, ?They use us as a website to sell further afield, especially in places where these isn?t much availability for some of these products.?

Heat vs Bulls NBA Picks

Back-to-Back for Miami

The Heat came out of the All-Star break with a game in Atlanta on Wednesday night and now they have the Bulls on Thursday. Miami is capable of winning at any time and against any team and even in a no rest situation. The Heat entered this week with the best record in the Eastern Conference and they are favored to win the NBA title in NBA futures at Diamond sportsbook. The Heat were just 11-13 ATS before this week in road games so even though they win most of the time straight up, they don?t always cover the spread. The Heat are fifth in the league in points per game and 12th in points allowed.

Bulls 7-20 ATS at Home

Chicago has been awful at home this season vs. the pointspread. The Bulls are only 15-12 straight up in home games and against the spread it has been ugly. Chicago simply doesn?t score enough points to cover the spread when they are favored. The Bulls are just 27th in the league in points per game. Chicago does play excellent defense as they are 3rd in the league in points allowed but covering the spread is a problem for the Bulls when they are at home.

Live NBA Betting

You can bet this game while it is in progress at BetDSI Sportsbook. Both of the TNT games on Thursday night will include live betting so get in on the action on Thursday night.

Series Notes

The Heat have won six of the last ten in this series although they are just 5-5 against the spread. Five of the last six have gone under the total. This has been a home team series as the Bulls have taken 7 of the last 10 at home with three of the last four going under.

Heat vs Bulls NBA Picks

The trends definitely point to a low scoring game so I will take this game on Thursday under the total.

Back to business for Obama after Fla. golf weekend

President Barack Obama hit the links with a comparatively low-key group of partners on Monday, the third and final day of a Florida golf vacation.

Obama played at the Floridian yacht and golf club, where he spent Presidents Day weekend, with departing U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, the president's Chicago pal Eric Whitaker and White House aide Marvin Nicholson, the White House said.

Tiger Woods was part of Sunday's presidential foursome.

Obama was returning home late Monday, with days to go before a March 1 deadline to stop billions of dollars in spending cuts that could potentially cripple the government from kicking in.

With his wife and daughters away on an annual ski trip, Obama arranged a post-State of the Union, mini-vacation for himself to the exclusive club along Florida's Treasure Coast. The Floridian is owned by Houston businessman Jim Crane, who also owns the Houston Astros baseball team and has donated money to Obama's political campaigns.

Crane and Kirk also played golf with the president on Saturday and Sunday. Obama also got some instruction from Butch Harmon, Woods' former swing coach.

The White House barred media coverage of the president's vacation, but released the names of his golf partners daily.

March 1 is the start date for $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts, known in Washington as "the sequester," that would drain the money from the Pentagon and other domestic agencies over the next seven months. The White House has warned that thousands of FBI agents, prosecutors, food safety inspectors, air traffic controllers and other federal workers would either be laid off or furloughed.

Obama has called on Congress to pass a smaller package of spending cuts and measures to close tax loopholes to buy time to negotiate a broader agreement. Republicans so far have rejected that idea.

On Friday, Obama was meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Obama telephoned Abe last week to discuss North Korea's recent nuclear test.
