(AP) ? Lowe's Cos. said Monday its fiscal fourth-quarter net income rose 13 percent, better than analysts expected, as homeowners took on more home-improvement projects during mild winter months.

The results are the latest sign that the housing sector may slowly be improving. Last week, Lowe's larger rival Home Depot Inc. reported its fourth-quarter profit rose for similar reasons.

"We have seen an uptick in activity," Lowe's CEO Robert Niblock said in a telephone interview. "We did have favorable weather, but even beyond that there's a greater willingness of the consumer to spend."

Home repair and maintenance are still the biggest projects people take on, he said, with demand for larger-scale renovations such as kitchen remodeling still lagging, Niblock said.

The company has also been moving away limited-time sales in favor of lowering prices permanently in some areas to better compete with chief rival Home Depot. Niblock said the price-cutting is largely complete and now the company is working with vendors to lower costs.

He declined to give specifics on how much the company has lowered prices, but said some categories, like appliances, will still see periodic sales rather than across-the-board price cuts.

Lowe's reported net income of $322 million, or 26 cents per share, for the period ended Feb. 3. That's up from $285 million, or 21 cents per share, a year earlier.

The most recent quarter included 3 cents per share for store closings and other items. Removing those items, earnings were 29 cents per share.

Analysts predicted 24 cents per share, according to a FactSet survey. Analysts' estimates typically exclude unusual items.

Revenue rose to $11.63 billion from $10.48 billion, topping Wall Street's estimate of $11.35 billion.

The Mooresville, N.C., company said that an extra week in the period contributed $766 million to its sales and about 5 cents per share to its earnings.

Revenue at stores open at least a year rose 3.4 percent overall and 3.5 percent in the U.S. This metric is a key indicator of a retailer's health because it excludes results from stores recently opened or closed.

For the full year, Lowe's earnings declined 9 percent to $1.84 billion, or $1.43 per share, from $2.01 billion, or $1.42 per share, a year earlier. Annual revenue rose 3 percent to $50.21 billion from $48.82 billion.

Revenue at stores open at least a year was nearly flat for the year.

One analyst said Lowe's was moving in the right direction.

"We continue to believe that a housing recovery is coming, and when it arrives we would expect even stronger (revenue in stores open at least one year) and margin expansion," said Credit Suisse analyst Gary Balter, who rates the company "Outperform."

Lowe's predicts fiscal 2012 earnings of $1.75 to $1.85 per share. Revenue is expected to rise 1 percent to 2 percent, which implies $50.69 billion to $51.2 billion.

Analysts foresee full-year earnings of $1.81 per share on revenue of $50.23 billion.

Lowe's had 1,745 stores in the U.S., Canada and Mexico at the quarter's end.

Its shares rose 18 cents to close at $27.34 Monday.

Orange Santa Clara packs Intel power, we go hands-on at MWC 2012 (video)

Hot on the heels of Intel's big event, we've finally got our hands on Orange's Medfield smartphone. The Santa Clara is powered by the Intel Atom Z2460 1.6GHz processor, clocked at 1.6GHz. It does have 2011's Gingerbread kind of Android, but Orange is promising to bring ICS to the phone soon after launch -- in fact an Intel spokesperson told us that it's already had Android 4.0 running on these devices. There's a few differences between this and the Xolo X900 by Lava -- so we've given it a judicious investigation at Intel's big launch party. We'll be adding our hands-on video very soon, but our hands-on thoughts are after the break.

Diagnostic tool: Polymer film loaded with antibodies can capture tumor cells

ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? The development of polymer film loaded with antibodies that can capture tumor cells shows promise as a diagnostic tool. Cancer cells that break free from a tumor and circulate through the bloodstream spread cancer to other parts of the body. But this process, called metastasis, is extremely difficult to monitor because the circulating tumor cells (CTCs) can account for as few as one in every billion blood cells.

Research led by scientists at the RIKEN Advanced Science Institute in Wako, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Institute of Chemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, has produced a polymer film that can capture specific CTCs1. With further development, the system could help doctors to diagnose an advancing cancer and assess the effectiveness of treatments.

The researchers used a small electrical voltage to help deposit a conducting polymer film of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) bearing carboxylic acid groups on to a 2-centimeter-square glass base (Fig. 1). The polymer formed nanodots, tiny bumps that measure 100 to 300 nanometers across, depending on the voltage used (1-1.4 V).

Adding a chemical linker to the film allowed it to bind a protein called streptavidin; this protein then joined to an antibody. In turn, the antibody could latch on to an antigen called epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), which is produced by most tumor cells. In this way, the film could grab tumor cells from just a few milliliters of a blood sample.

The team tested several types of tumor cells on films with various sizes and densities of nanodots, and used a microscope to observe how well they captured the cells. The most effective film, with nanodots measuring about 230 nanometers across and containing about 8 dots per square micrometer, captured roughly 240 breast-cancer cells per square millimeter of film. In contrast, it caught fewer than 30 cervical cancer cells that do not express EpCAM, proving that the antibody used on the film is highly selective. A smooth PEDOT-carboxylic acid film with the same antibody captured only 50 or so breast cancer cells.

The film's efficiency depends on the size and spacing of the nanodots, and the presence of the capturing antibody. Since these can be easily modified, the same method could be used to make films that sense other types of cells.

The next step is to "further optimize the nanostructures of the conducting polymers and understand in more detail the cell-capturing mechanism," says RIKEN unit leader Hsiao-hua Yu. "We are also currently working on a direct electrical readout of the captured cells, without needing to use a microscope."

Researchers build first physical 'metatronic' circuit

Friday, February 24, 2012

The technological world of the 21st century owes a tremendous amount to advances in electrical engineering, specifically, the ability to finely control the flow of electrical charges using increasingly small and complicated circuits. And while those electrical advances continue to race ahead, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania are pushing circuitry forward in a different way, by replacing electricity with light.

"Looking at the success of electronics over the last century, I have always wondered why we should be limited to electric current in making circuits," said Nader Engheta, professor in the electrical and systems engineering department of Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science. "If we moved to shorter wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum ? like light ? we could make things smaller, faster and more efficient."

Different arrangements and combinations of electronic circuits have different functions, ranging from simple light switches to complex supercomputers. These circuits are in turn built of different arrangements of circuit elements, like resistors, inductors and capacitors, which manipulate the flow of electrons in a circuit in mathematically precise ways. And because both electric circuits and optics follow Maxwell's equations ? the fundamental formulas that describe the behavior of electromagnetic fields ? Engheta's dream of building circuits with light wasn't just the stuff of imagination. In 2005, he and his students published a theoretical paper outlining how optical circuit elements could work.

Now, he and his group at Penn have made this dream a reality, creating the first physical demonstration of "lumped" optical circuit elements. This represents a milestone in a nascent field of science and engineering Engheta has dubbed "metatronics."

Engheta's research, which was conducted with members of his group in the electrical and systems engineering department, Yong Sun, Brian Edwards and Andrea Al?, was published in the journal Nature Materials.

In electronics, the "lumped" designation refers to elements that can be treated as a black box, something that turns a given input to a perfectly predictable output without an engineer having to worry about what exactly is going on inside the element every time he or she is designing a circuit.

"Optics has always had its own analogs of elements, things like lenses, waveguides and gratings," Engheta said, "but they were never lumped. Those elements are all much larger than the wavelength of light because that's all that could be easily built in the old days. For electronics, the lumped circuit elements were always much smaller than the wavelength of operation, which is in the radio or microwave frequency range."

Nanotechnology has now opened that possibility for lumped optical circuit elements, allowing construction of structures that have dimensions measured in nanometers. In this experiment's case, the structure was comb-like arrays of rectangular nanorods made of silicon nitrite.

The "meta" in "metatronics" refers to metamaterials, the relatively new field of research where nanoscale patterns and structures embedded in materials allow them to manipulate waves in ways that were previously impossible. Here, the cross-sections of the nanorods and the gaps between them form a pattern that replicates the function of resistors, inductors and capacitors, three of the most basic circuit elements, but in optical wavelengths.

"If we have the optical version of those lumped elements in our repertoire, we can actually make designs similar to what we do in electronics but now for operation with light," Engheta said. "We can build a circuit with light."

In their experiment, the researchers illuminated the nanorods with an optical signal, a wave of light in the mid-infrared range. They then used spectroscopy to measure the wave as it passed through the comb. Repeating the experiment using nanorods with nine different combinations of widths and heights, the researchers showed that the optical "current" and optical "voltage" were altered by the optical resistors, inductors and capacitors with parameters corresponding to those differences in size.

"A section of the nanorod acts as both an inductor and resistor, and the air gap acts as a capacitor," Engheta said.

Beyond changing the dimensions and the material the nanorods are made of, the function of these optical circuits can be altered by changing the orientation of the light, giving metatronic circuits access to configurations that would be impossible in traditional electronics.

This is because a light wave has polarizations; the electric field that oscillates in the wave has a definable orientation in space. In metatronics, it is that electric field that interacts and is changed by elements, so changing the field's orientation can be like rewiring an electric circuit.

When the plane of the field is in line with the nanorods, as in Figure A, the circuit is wired in parallel and the current passes through the elements simultaneously. When the plane of the electric field crosses both the nanorods and the gaps, as in Figure B, the circuit is wired in series and the current passes through the elements sequentially.

"The orientation gives us two different circuits, which is why we call this 'stereo-circuitry,'" Engheta said. "We could even have the wave hit the rods obliquely and get something we don't have in regular electronics: a circuit that's neither in series or in parallel but a mixture of the two."

This principle could be taken to an even higher level of complexity by building nanorod arrays in three dimensions. An optical signal hitting such a structure's top would encounter a different circuit than a signal hitting its side. Building off their success with basic optical elements, Engheta and his group are laying the foundation for this kind of complex metatronics.

"Another reason for success in electronics has to do with its modularity," he said. "We can make an infinite number of circuits depending on how we arrange different circuit elements, just like we can arrange the alphabet into different words, sentences and paragraphs.

"We're now working on designs for more complicated optical elements," Engheta said. "We're on a quest to build these new letters one by one."

OAK BROOK, Ill. In a new study published in the March issue of Radiology, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) shows that cognitive rehabilitation changes brain function and improves cognitive performance in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS).

"These results prompt the use of specific computer-based rehabilitation programs to treat deficits in selected neuropsychological domains in patients with relapsing-remitting MS," said the study's lead author, Massimo Filippi, M.D., professor of neurology at the San Raffaele Vita-Salute University and director of the "BrainMap" interdepartmental research program and the Neuroimaging Research Unit, Department of Neuroscience, Scientific Institute San Raffaele, Milan, Italy. "They also suggest that fMRI might provide useful metrics to monitor the effects of rehab in MS."

MS is a nervous system disease affecting the brain and spinal cord. MS damages a material called the myelin sheath that surrounds and protects nerve cells. This damage disrupts messages between the brain and other parts of the body, leading to symptoms such as muscle weakness, coordination and balance difficulties, numbness, problems with vision, memory loss and other cognitive issues. MS affects women more than men and often becomes symptomatic between the ages of 20 and 40.

In relapsing-remitting MS, the most common type, patients experience a series of attacks followed by partial or complete disappearance of symptoms. The interval between relapses can range from weeks to years.

Cognitive impairment affects a large proportion of patients with MS in the areas of attention, information processing, executive functions, memory and visual-spatial abilities. Cognitive dysfunction impacts a range of activities, including work, driving and social integration.

For the study, Dr. Filippi and colleagues recruited 20 patients with relapsing-remitting MS. Patients were randomized into two groups of 10. The first group received a 12-week program of computer-assisted cognitive rehabilitation of attention and information processing and executive functions, and the second (control) group received no cognitive rehabilitation.

Aspects of the rehabilitation program included a day-planning task, which employed realistic simulations of a set of scheduled dates and duties to address the patient's ability to organize, plan and develop solution strategies; and an attention task requiring the patient to simulate driving a train, carefully observing the control panel of the train and the countryside while encountering several distractions at increasing levels of difficulty.

All of the patients underwent neuropsychological assessment and MRI exams at baseline and after 12 weeks. As compared to their performance at baseline, the patients in the treatment group improved in tests of attention and information processing and executive functions. The fMRI results showed modifications in activity in several brain regions in the rehabilitation group, compared to the non-rehabilitation group. These fMRI modifications were correlated with cognitive improvement.

Analysis after cognitive rehabilitation found no structural changes in the gray matter or normal-appearing white matter of the brain in the treatment group.

"The findings demonstrated that computer-assisted cognitive rehabilitation in patients with MS results in an improvement of the trained cognitive functions," Dr. Filippi said. "However, the structural integrity of the brain's gray matter and white matter showed no modifications in these patients, suggesting an impairment of structural plasticity."

Fatherhood and the Second Child

Having a second child often seems like a complete rehash of how everything happened the first time around. Your wife finds out that she?s pregnant, you go to prenatal appointments, and you start decorating a new bedroom. When the time comes, you rush her off to the hospital and help her greet a beautiful new son or daughter into the world. Then you arrive home and suffer through a couple months that fall among the most exhausting, busy, and rewarding in your life. One minute you?re telling your wife that she should think about donating eggs rather than having more kids; the next, you?re saying that maybe it wouldn?t be so bad to have a third child.

But there?s one difference this time around: you already have a kid at home. Even amidst all the commotion surrounding your second-born?s birth and first few months home, your oldest child is going to need care and attention. He?s going to need explicit displays of affection and reassurances that he is still loved just as much as before. While different children react in different ways to the birth of a younger sibling, it is almost inevitable that they will feel jealous and upset from time to time. Such jealously is only more likely to occur if you and your wife spend all your time caring for the new infant.

This is where the father?s role because especially crucial. Although both parents are certainly responsible for the care of an infant, and although you?re probably just as likely to change a diaper in the middle of the night as is your spouse, the wife usually becomes the prime caregiver to a new baby. You can?t nurse the baby, after all, and your wife probably has a better handle on his needs after carrying him around for the previous nine months. As the father, your role is to consequently become the prime caregiver to your elder child. In this capacity, you need to insure that your older son or daughter feels adequately loved and cared for in the face of a major life change. Spend one-on-one time with them. Go out for outings or play a new game. Make sandwiches together and head out to the park. When trying to avert a jealousy situation, a little bit of personalized time can go a long way.

There?s no question that your new baby will demand your attention, and that you will to help your wife whenever possible by providing care. But don?t forget the needs of your first-born. As the father, you are best equipped to address them at this time.

Less-than-perfect Credit Used Car Loans Rates ? 3 Tricks for ...

Posted by : shan | On : February 20, 2012

Buying a used car bank loan with poor credit is as simple as finding approved for a financial loan with a good credit rating. For the reason that car lending products are guarantee-primarily based, many auto loan financial institutions take on lending products to people with poor credit. You?ll find good and bad points to acquiring financing with poor credit. A main problem involves bigger interest rates. However, there are ways to not pay a lot more for any second hand vehicle financing. Below are a few good ideas , get approved.

Use a Denver-Lender

Obtaining approved for car finance with poor credit or no history of credit isn?t hard. In fact, auto loan organizations frequently give financing to people with minimal credit ratings. Financial loan interest rates are mainly pay day loan on credit worthiness. Clearly, those that have great credit history qualify for really low prices. Alternatively, for those who recently submitted bankruptcy, have got a prior repossession, or poor credit, significantly lower rates has to be miraculous.

Thankfully, likely to easy way obtain a minimal charge automotive cash advance same day with poor credit. This requires looking for your vehicle bank loan that has a co-signer or co-customer. Denver-borrowers are therapeutic for many reasons. To become qualified as a co-customer, the individual chosen should have a substantial history of credit. Simply because grow to be the cause of the auto bank loan if the principal customer cannot make expenses, using a co-customer will help buyers obtain a more affordable charge.

Sign up for the Auto Financial loan with a Down Payment

Another method for buying a more affordable charge on car finance consists of implementing with an advance payment. Deposit volumes change. A very good decrease serwis wozkow widlowych normally is made up of 10Per-cent. Nonetheless, people who have excessive credit history complications could are not prepared to obtain a minimal charge. In such cases, acquiring an advance payment will more affordable the total invested, which often can produce a less expensive monthly instalment.

Little by little Improve Credit Standing

Although credit ratings will not develop instantaneously, tiny problems will add several points. One example is, paying debts in time increase to your credit rating every month. Additionally, reducing charge cards will even squeeze in a very few points. Reducing late and series accounts is an additional way to swiftly put points to to your credit rating. If thinking of financing a used car or truck with poor credit, effort the prior suggestions. This will likely make the variance in establishing a motor vehicle charge of 12 % and 9 percent.

Coffee ? From Food to Drink. The background of the discovery of coffee is rife with speculation.

Its transition from foods to beverage is equally open to interpretation and historical variances. Early European explorers and botanists assumed that Ethiopians chewed raw coffee beans for electrical power just after choosing their grazing goats consuming the coffee berry.

They would pound the ripened coffee berries and combine them with animal fat so they became pasty round pellets. The concentration of coffee, Website Link excess fat, and protein grew to become a very important supply of electricity and sustenance, mainly in the course of lean occasions or all through war. The coffee cherries were also very likely eaten raw given that the pulp is sweet and has the extra advantage of caffeine.

Early data even indicate that coffee cherries were made use of to make wine. Its doable that coffee was handled as food in Arabia as properly. See Here Only later did the early Arabs use it as a drink. Information exhibit that the earliest edition of coffee as a drink took place by steeping complete coffee hulls in cold water. The hulls ended up then roasted above an open fire, and then boiled again in water right until a pale yellow liquid was produced.Numerous posting anyone will probably scan through ? Web Link

Somebody should have told me what to expect once the baby arrived in my home.? Someone should have sat me down and said, ?Nate, I have something to tell you.? It is about having children.? There are things you MUST know prior to becoming a parent.?

If I had known all the challenges, would I still have chosen to become a parent? ?Hmm?that is a good question, for another day.

But I am here, once again to help out.? For those of you thinking of having kids, this info is for you.? Read and learn.

Newborns do not sleep alone.

Newborns like warmth.? They like comfort.? They like being very close to their parents.? As a matter of fact, what they like best is to sleep on top of their parents?all the time.? It is a myth that a newborn will sleep for hours in a crib.? Prepare yourself to be sitting with a small child on top of you, for?hours on end.

Toddlers do not like to eat.

Feeding a toddler is difficult.? The reason is their growing rate has slowed down considerably from being an infant.? They no longer are hungry all the time.? Toddlers also start to develop specific tastes for certain foods.? Agony will set in quickly if you try to feed a toddler, who does not want to eat.

Two year olds are very emotional.

We all have heard the term, ?terrible twos, but really two isn?t so bad.? You just need to keep in mind a two-year old has little control over their emotions.? One minute laughing, the next lying in the middle of the grocery store kicking the rice bags.

Potty training will not go well.

People brag all the time how their child was potty trained in one week.? They say their child was only 18 months when they learned.? They are lying.? Potty training, the correct term is potty learning, will be difficult.? You will want you child to be potty-learned sooner than your child is ready.? This creates pressure to get the child out of diapers.? Pressure and potty learning do not go well.?? Forcing someone to do something that is supposed to happen naturally, does not work.

Four year olds are ferocious.

Parents spend too much time worrying about the terrible twos.? Two year olds take naps, forgive quickly are still little.? Four year olds are the ones to worry about.? They are strong, determined and smart.? Four year olds have tremendous stamina.? They can outlast you on any struggle.

Starting kindergarten will be the end of freedom.

Kindergarten is fun, but?you must understand your?flexible schedule?will no ?longer be flexible once your child begins elementary school.? The school calendar rules how and when your family activities will be organized.? Individual parental needs fall secondary a child?s school activities.

Laundry will become your part-time job.

I remember doing laundry once a week as a single person.? Now I do two loads a day, every day.?? Invest in a great washer? and dryer.? Always wash, fold and put away on the same day.? Otherwise clothes will stay in baskets and on couches for weeks.

Cooking will become another part-time job.

No one ever told me how much cooking I would be doing as a mother.? If they did, I would not have signed up.? I do not like to cook.? Every day, while kids are living in your home, you will need to prepare one to three meals.? It is the worst.

Kids are gross.

Children barf, poop, pee, bleed, fart, drool, ooze, burp,?and stink.? This will happen all on one day sometimes.? If you can?t handle any of these things, do not sign up for parenthood.

Children are expensive.

Children need food, clothes, medical care, housing, school supplies, and more food.? The older they get the more money it will need to keep them alive.? Saving money is easy.? Just say no to having kids.

Helpful information I hope.? Of course, as difficult as parenthood can be at times, I could not imagine my boys not being part of my life.

But if I had known all these things?? Hmm?that is question for another day.

(AP) ? A Chinese envoy visiting Damascus is calling on all sides in Syria to stop the violence and says he is hopeful that the authorities will restore stability soon.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun spoke in the Syrian capital following a meeting with President Bashar Assad Saturday.

He said China was "extremely concerned" about the escalation of the crisis in Syria.

China along with Russia has refused to condemn Syria over the crackdown on an uprising now in its 11th month, which according to the U.N. killed more than 5,400 people last year alone.

China this week voted against a U.N. General Assembly resolution condemning human rights violations in Syria.

The vote followed China's recent veto of a similar resolution in the U.N. Security Council.

Phoenix Sportsmen's Expo Host First-Ever Hunting the Rez Auction

Gathering of the Tribes and Hunting the Rez Auction.

First Annual Indian Country Big Game Auction

First Annual Indian Country Big Game Auction

International Sportsmen?s Exposition

Glendale, AZ --(Ammoland.com)- Hunters and outdoor-sports enthusiasts will have a chance to bid on art pieces and hunting and fishing packages?some fetching perhaps six figures?at the ?First Annual Indian Country Big Game Auction.?

Showcasing big-game hunting and fishing opportunities available on U.S. and Canadian Indian Reservations, the auction will be conducted during the Phoenix International Sportsmen?s Exposition, which runs February 23-26 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

Coordinated by Hunting The Rez Magazine, the auction will take place on Friday, February 24, from 3p-6p on the show?s main Adventure Theater stage. Auction items are listed online: http://bid.huntingtherez.com/auction.aspx?as=22110

ISE Phoenix will also feature the first-ever Hunting The Rez Pavilion, in which the following North American tribes will spotlight their outdoor opportunities:

  • Blackfeet Nation, Browning, MT
  • Blood Reserve, Stand Off Alberta, Canada
  • Chippewa ? Cree, Rocky Boy, MT
  • Gros Ventre ? Assiniboine, Fort Belknap, MT
  • Hualape Game & Fish Dept., Peach Springs, AZ
  • Jicarilla Game & Fish Dept., Dulce, NM
  • Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, Lower Brule, SD
  • Mandan ? Hidatsu ? Arikara (MHA Nation/Three Affiliated Tribes), New Town, ND
  • Pueblo of Acoma, Acoma, NM
  • Pueblo of Zuni, Zuni, NM
  • Quinault Nation, Taholah, WA
  • San Carlos Apache Recreation, San Carlos, AZ
  • White Mountain Apache Tribe, Whiteriver, AZ

Jason Belcourt, co-founder and editor of Hunting The Rez Magazine, commented: ?Indian country offers vast hunting and fishing opportunities and this auction is a way to showcase what?s available to a very large audience of sports enthusiasts.

?Other expos have featured auctions, but Hunting The Rez?s event is the first where all of the hunting and fishing packages up for bid are exclusively from Indian reservations,? said Belcourt. ?Tribes and tribal outfitting businesses will be able to meet with anglers and big-game hunters who may have never hunted or fished on Indian Reservations.?

Another motivation for this special event, says Belcourt, is the amount of misinformation in the hunting community.

?Each Tribe has its own laws and regulations for hunting and fishing on their property. Many of the tribes are in the early stages of developing their fish-and-game departments. This auction and the HTR Pavilion is a way to educate the market about what hunting and fishing is available today in Indian Country.?

About International Sportsmen?s Exposition
?The International Sportsmen?s Exposition is Arizona?s largest, most-diverse gathering of fishing, hunting and outdoor products and destinations all year,? said John Kirk, ISE?s Director of Communications. ?With hundreds of exhibiting companies, free seminars throughout the day every day, free parking, giant Youth Fair plus free entry for youth under 16 and active military, the ISE is also a tremendous family value.?

DETAILS: $15 adult admission. Hours: Thurs-Fri 10:00am ? 6:00pm; Sat 10:00am ? 6:00pm; Sun 10:00am ? 5:00pm.

Traumatic brain injury linked to post-traumatic stress disorder, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Feb. 15, 2012) ? UCLA life scientists and their colleagues have provided the first evidence of a causal link between traumatic brain injury and an increased susceptibility to post-traumatic stress disorder.

Their new study, published Feb. 15 in the in the journal Biological Psychology, also suggests that people who suffer even a mild traumatic brain injury are more likely to develop an anxiety disorder and should take precautions to avoid stressful situations for at least some period of time.

The motivation behind the study, which was conducted in rats, was the observed correlation of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, and PTSD, particularly in military veterans returning from service overseas, said Michael Fanselow, a UCLA professor of psychology and the senior author of the study.

The reasons for this correlation are unknown. It could be simply that the events that cause brain injury are also very frightening and that the link between TBI and PTSD could be merely incidental. Fanselow and his colleagues, however, hypothesized that the two "could be linked in a more mechanistic way."

Using procedures to separate the physical and emotional traumas, the scientists trained the rats using "fear conditioning" techniques two days after they experienced a concussive brain trauma -- ensuring the brain injury and the experience of fear occurred on different days.

"We found that the rats with the earlier TBI acquired more fear than control rats (without TBI)," said Fanselow, a member of UCLA's Brain Research Institute. "Something about the brain injury rendered them more susceptible to acquiring an inappropriately strong fear. It was as if the injury primed the brain for learning to be afraid."

To learn why this occurred, the researchers analyzed a small piece of brain tissue, the amygdala, which is the brain's critical hub for fear learning.

"We found that there are significantly more receptors for excitatory neurotransmitters that promote learning," said Maxine Reger, a UCLA graduate student of psychology in Fanselow's laboratory and the lead author of the study.

"This finding suggests that brain injury leaves the amygdala in a more excitable state that readies it for acquiring potent fear," Fanselow said.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense and the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center.

Co-authors of the study were David Hovda, a professor of neurosurgery and of molecular and medical pharmacology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and director of the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center; Andrew Poulos, a postdoctoral fellow in Fanselow's laboratory; Floyd Buen, a former graduate student in Hovda's laboratory; and Christopher Giza, an associate professor of neurosurgery at the Geffen School of Medicine.

The research was a collaboration between Fanselow's laboratory, which studies neural mechanisms of anxiety disorders, and Hovda's laboratory, which investigates brain injury.

"One of UCLA's great strengths is the spirit of collaboration that allows scientists from very different departments to combine their very different expertises to answer important but difficult questions," Fanselow said.

Renal Failure Symptoms: Knowing It Early ... - New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Kidney failure may be found slowly or suddenly, and convey a long list of different renal failure symptoms. Though renal failure isn?t a direct root cause of death itself, it?s the electrolyte discrepancy and development of toxins in the blood turn out damaging other organs, resulting in death by stroke, cerebral dysfunction, or asphyxiation. Most of the time, renal failure can be mitigated if it is detected quickly. For that reason, it?s critical for people with risk factors for kidney disease to recognize renal failure symptoms as soon as possible as well.

The kidneys are essential organs. They help maintain the balance of electrolytes in the blood, and can bring about either the excretion or retention of water. Renal failure symptoms show up once the body does several last-ditch attempts to eliminate the waste building up in the bloodstream.

Many other illnesses can lead to kidney problems. Things such as kidney stones, diabetes, cancer, and even multiple sclerosis can all lead to kidney failure if the conditions are right. The kidneys are extremely complex organs, including a network of tubes, valves, muscles, and specialized parts that deal with filtering electrolytes, toxins, and water out of the body. If something goes wrong anywhere across the pathway from the kidneys to the urethra, it may cause fluid to retain into the kidneys themselves. This increase in fluid pressure can damage the fragile structures in the kidneys, leading to kidney damage and renal failure symptoms.

Sometimes, the illness itself isn?t what causes harm to the kidneys. Even with illnesses that spare the kidneys, the medications used in diagnosis and treatment can end up harming them. This is because all of these medications need to leave the body gradually, and the kidneys are their last stop before being excreted. So, the kidneys turn out having to work on eliminating these drugs, many of which are toxic. If these medications are consumed for a long period of time, there may also be cumulative damage to the kidneys e.g. unwanted effects bringing about renal failure symptoms.

In the initial phases of kidney failure, there may be no renal failure symptoms. The human body is in fact fairly tolerant, and is able to regulate the bloodstream very efficiently. For instance, the though normal blood levels of a waste product known as creatinine are between 0.5-1.2 mg/dl for a healthy person, and up to 1.9 for a person with only one kidney, they can go up to 10.0 mg/dl before a person requires medical treatment to filter the blood. Since renal failure symptoms are really produced by the body as a reaction to this buildup of toxins in the blood, it often takes some time for toxins to build up in sufficient amounts to cause symptoms. So, symptoms may not even show up until kidney failure is already pretty advanced. This is why emergency treatment is important once renal failure symptoms become apparent.

Beware of the most common renal failure symptoms that you might experience. Prepare to naturally treat renal failure symptoms soon!. This article, Renal Failure Symptoms: Knowing It Early Saves Life is released under a creative commons attribution license.

Lifestyles of the Japanese (2011 version): part 3 of 3

What is the objective of work to you? Work is to... graph of japanese statistics[part 1][part 2][part 3]

The Cabinet Office Japan recently released the results of a survey they conducted into citizens? lifestyles. I translated a survey on the same topic in 2009, 2007, and 2005, if you wish to cross-reference.

Demographics

Between the 13th of October and the 6th of November 2011 10,000 members of the public who were randomly selected from resident registers were approached for interview. Of that number, 6,212 people actually took part in the survey, conducted by means of face-to-face interviews. 53.9% of the sample were female, 8.7% in their twenties, 13.9% in their thirties, 17.2% in their forties, 15.8% in their fifties, 21.7% in their sixties, 16.5% in their seventies, and 6.1% aged eighty or older. Furthermore 71.7% of the sample were married, 13.0% divorced or widowed, 15.1% unmarried, and 0.2% did not answer. Additionally, 77.9% had children, including those that were adults or not living with them. Although 34.5% said they used the internet from a computer almost every day and 39.0% used the internet from mobile devices almost every day, there was also 45.2% and 42.8% who never used it at all from computers and from mobile devices respectively.

Madonna says she never planned "Wild" performance at Super Bowl (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES, Feb 5 (TheWrap.com) ? Sorry, Joe Francis; Madonna won't give you a chance to rake in a Super Bowl payday.

On Friday, David R. Houston, attorney for "Girls Gone Wild" mogul Francis, sent Madonna a letter threatening legal action if she performs her new song of the same name at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday. The letter was obtained by TMZ.

Houston told the singer, "our misappropriation of my clients' trademark will not be tolerated" and accused her of trying to take a "free ride" on "the valuable consumer goodwill and brand recognition of my clients' trademark." ("Girls Gone Wild?" Goodwill?)

Noting that Francis is "ready and willing to pursue legal action," Houston is demanding that Madonna "negotiate an immediate licensing agreement for use of the Trademark" and pay Francis' attorney's fees in the matter.

Oh, and he also insisted that the Material Mom promise not to "perform or market the song at the Super Bowl this Sunday."

As it turns out, Francis could have given his lawyer the day off, because Madge doesn't plan to perform the song -- and never did.

"The song will not be performed at Super Bowl halftime show," Madonna's publicist told TheWrap. "It was never a possibility. She has confirmed she will be performing her new single and three of her gems from the past."

Her new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin'," was released Friday.

"Girls Gone Wild" is on Madonna's upcoming album "MDNA," which is scheduled for a March 26 release but went on presale at iTunes on Friday.

In the letter, Houston said that his "research" indicated that Madonna would be performing the song at the Super Bowl.

Perhaps now Francis can get back to what he really should be outraged about in Madonna's halftime show -- the singer's vow that there won't be any wardrobe malfunctions this year.

Advantages of Law of Attraction in Network Marketing Business ...

There are lots of people that get into different home based jobs and speaking of home based jobs, network marketing business will be on top of the list. Network marketing business is legitimate business contrast with the belief of the many people back in early 80?s that this kind of business is a pyramid scam.
