IT Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Manager at National ...

As part of preparation towards the full rollout of the National Identity Management System (NIMS), the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arranged to engage the services of suitable candidates with integrity drive and desire to win professionally as individual consultants for the following IT functions in the Commission?s IT/Identity Database Department:

Position: IT Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Manager

Job Description:

The successful candidate shall be responsible for coordinating the development and execution of policies and procedures to mitigate exposure during disruptions of service and ensure the critical business functions can be resumed within a defined time frame. This responsibility includes, coordinating design, development, maintenance, and exercising (testing) of the overall disaster recovery plans for each critical functional area of the organization to address the following.

The Emergency Response organization and procedures for reacting to and coordinating recovery efforts.
The Recovery Support procedures for restoring key organization resources
The Business Resumption procedures for the continuation of critical business processes.

Furthermore, the incumbent shall be responsible for ensuring that critical business functions are perpetually available to stakeholders and entities that must have access to those functions. The manager?s activities include a variety of daily activities to maintain service consistency and recover-ability, such as project risk assessment, change control, and periodic system audit and backups etc.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Identify acceptable recovery time periods, and establish resources required for the successful resumption of business operations in the event of a disaster
Assure records required for recovery are identified and properly maintained;
Establish disaster recovery testing methodologies
Plan and coordinate procedures the testing of recovery support and business resumption procedures in different functional areas.
Conduct disaster recovery training for staff members in all functional areas
Provide and regularly update instructional and informational materials on how staffs are expected to respond during an emergency.
Assist recovery support and business resumption staff during a disaster in the implementation of response and alternate operating strategies.
Act as a coordinator during an emergency situation.
Work with vendors of disaster recovery services and facilities; study and recommend outside services for use during a disaster situation.
Maintain contact with outside organizations participating in reciprocal agreements.
Work with business continuity management to ensure that as new equipment, facilities, services, and systems are installed that the disaster recovery issues are addressed.
Maintain contact with professional organizations and local/regional emergency response groups.
Perform risk analysis for corporate functional areas to identity points of vulnerability and recommend disaster avoidance and reduction strategies.
Provide guidance to and coordinate the efforts of staff members in the development of recovery procedures for key areas of the organization.
Develop corporate emergency response procedures.
Analyze environmental and equipment configurations for critical corporate resources; recommend disaster avoidance measures and improved backup capabilities.
Periodically review changes in corporate resources with the management of those areas to assure the effectiveness of the recovery procedures and backup capabilities.
Conduct business, impact analyses and assist company units to determine critical business processes.
Coordinate the efforts of staff members in different functional areas in the development of procedures for the continuity of business processes in a disaster situation.
?Assure that recovery procedures are effective for the restoration or key corporate resources and for the resumption of critical business processes.
Design, develop and maintain standards and procedures for disaster recovery documentation.
Distribute and update emergency procedures to reflect evacuation drills and revise the procedures as necessary.
Keep up to date and upgrade the Business Continuity and Disaster Recover standards, tools and, techniques defined for the organization in line with leading industry standards.
Train and manage the business continuity and disaster recovery unit within the organization.

Minimum Requirements/Skills:

Post graduate degree e.g. Masters in Management Information Systems (MIS), Computer Science, Statistics, Business Management, or related field.
Certified Business Continuity Planner (CBCP) or Associate Disaster Recovery Planner accreditation preferred.
Membership of the Disaster Recovery Institute.
Membership of Business Continuity Institute.
Know-how of ITIL & IT Service Continuity ?certification will be an advantage.
Knowledge and understanding of the relevant standards (ISO31000, ISO22301, ISO 27000, BS25999 etc.)
Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) /Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

Dear Prudie,
I am a 23-year-old woman, and I have a sister three years younger who has always been treated as a second-class daughter by our parents. I was always "the smart one," "the slim one," "the determined one," while my sister was constantly told that she was dumb, fat, and lazy. This has created massive psychological problems for my sister: She is unemployed and barely got through high school. (My mother did almost all of her homework.) She lives with our mother, suffers from eating disorders, depression, and, in the past, substance abuse and cutting. I dealt with my own effects from the favoritism, which included narcissism and difficulty empathizing until I was in my teens. But I have been successful at school and work. My sister and I have spoken candidly about this blatant favoritism and have managed to piece together a fairly healthy relationship. I thought that there is not much point in risking estranging myself from my parents over this issue. But recently I was out with my mother and she made a comment to me about how when I was a baby, she and my dad would spend hours just gazing at me, how she never did that with my sister, and how I was ?just easier to love.? That made me think it may be necessary to confront my parents about their favoritism. I just don?t know how to go about this, especially since I want to be a responsible advocate for my sister and not make things worse for her.

Dear Golden,
Let?s go back to Psychology 101. Perhaps your mother, upon your birth, felt you fulfilled her ideal vision of herself. Here was a perfect, beautiful being that she created, a manifestation of everything she wanted to be. Then your your sister came along, and your mother projected onto her all her own worst qualities. As long as your mother?s own negative traits were embodied by your sister, you and your mother could mutually reflect only golden things back to each other. This is all armchair speculation, of course (my m?tier), but what?s indisputable is that your parents were grossly destructive and both their children have paid a price. I applaud you for recognizing the continuing damage your parents are doing to your sister, for having the desire to help her, and for recognizing there was a cost to being the perfect one. It?s also admirable that you have forged an honest and supportive relationship with your sister. How sad for her that she is so emotionally disabled that she?s now trapped with the abuser who shredded her sense of self. For advice on how you approach trying to change things, I spoke to Washington D.C. psychologist Ellen Weber Libby, author of The Favorite Child. Libby advises that you should use your privileged position with your parents to say there?s something you would like them to do for you to make you a happier person.

Say that your relationship with your sister is very important to you, and you want it to be improved. You can say you feel the family is not functioning as well as it could, and you would like all of you to go to family therapy together. It?s unclear whether your parents are divorced, but even if they are, if they are on reasonable terms they could attend together. Libby?s hunch is that your mother will refuse, so in that case say it would be a great gift to you if your parents could pay for you and your sister to go to therapy together. (She suggests looking for referrals at the the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy website.) Whether or not you are successful in recruiting your parents, once in therapy you and your sister can explore the burdens of one child being all good, the other all bad, and the psychic distortions imposed on you by your parents. But the ultimate goal is helping your sister forge a healthier identity and personal independence. Your sister is still a young woman and as terrible as things have been, Libby says that with the right help she can begin the process of creating a completely different life. She?s lucky she has you on her side.

Dear Prudence,
My husband "Jack" was raised in poverty by a single teenage mother, and she refuses to tell him, or anyone, who his father is. The last time he asked her was more than a decade ago. She told him it was none of his business and never to ask again or she would stop speaking to him. His siblings know who their fathers are; only Jack has been left in the dark. The lack of family history caused him a tremendous amount of embarrassment and condescension growing up. Even now it?s awkward in social situations. As a result, he is highly self-conscious about his background. I'm proud that he was able to pull himself out of poverty and become successful. However, he still feels a strong sense of loss and wants to know who the man is, even if he never meets him. Now that we are considering children, we are also concerned about potential health issues on his father's side. Should we bring up the subject of Jack?s father again to my mother-in-law? Are there any options if she continues to refuse to tell?

Dear Pandora,
Indeed there may be things that fly out of the box that your husband should be prepared to contemplate. It could be that your mother simply doesn?t know who Jack?s father is because there are too many candidates. It could be that she doesn?t know because she was raped. It could be that she knows, but she has kept her mouth shut about the father, uncle, or cousin who sexually assaulted her, and she?s determined to keep that horror a secret. Her dismissive behavior toward Jack is indefensible, but I doubt she?ll change. You two could approach her and say whatever the truth is, however painful, you hope she can understand how much Jack wants to know. Be prepared to be rebuffed. Hiring a private investigator is a next step, but that could be costly, and without Jack?s mother?s cooperation an investigation might not produce an answer. I understand there?s a hole in Jack?s life, but maybe it would help him be at more peace to realize he?s not alone. Many people never knew their fathers. Jack Nicholson is one. Bill Clinton is another. Clinton was told his was a traveling salesman who died before Clinton was born. But research by Clinton biographer David Maraniss raised some doubts and Clinton?s paternity remains unclear. You two shouldn?t worry about what might be lurking in Jack?s unknown father?s gene pool?usually there?s nothing dramatic, and Jack?s good health should reassure you both. As for social awkwardness, you husband needs to practice saying with confidence and equanimity, ?My father was not a part of my life.?

Dear Prudie,
After five years together, my partner and I have decided to get married. I've been starting the wedding planning and drawing up the guest list. My problem is whether to invite my uncle. He served as a state elected official and during that time he voted in favor of our state's constitutional ban on gay marriage. A part of me thinks that I should send the invite in the hope that he attends and changes his mind. However, another part of me doesn't want him present at this event if he isn't supportive. I don't want to offend my parents or any other family by not inviting him, and his absence would indeed be notable. At this point I'm leaning toward not inviting him.

Pantech Magnus pictured en route to AT&T

Pantech has been steadily building its relationship with AT&T over the past few years by supplying the carrier with a healthy dose of budget-friendly handsets. Could it be that the OEM has finally earned the opportunity to add a higher-end device to the GSM giant's lineup? It may very well be the case with the P9090, aka the Magnus. Our source has hooked us up with the first images of the smartphone, which confirms an 8MP camera with LED flash, front-facing cam and at least Ice Cream Sandwich (if not Jelly Bean). While the image doesn't reveal any other specs, we're expecting to see a 720p display, LTE connectivity and a Qualcomm MSM8960 dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor. We're still not sure what to think about the bumpy design on its back, though it does remind us a little bit of what Verizon has done on the HTC Incredible series. The specs may be quite similar to the Vega Racer 2, though the phone itself doesn't look anywhere close to the manufacturer's Korean flagship. AT&T still hasn't announced the Magnus, but we'll let you know pricing and availability as soon as we have it.

Samsung announces Galaxy Note 2!

We're live at Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2012 in Berlin, where Samsung has just announced the latest device in its Galaxy Note line, the Galaxy Note 2! The Note 2 is the widely-anticipated successor to last year's original Galaxy Note, and Samsung's improved upon that device with souped-up internals, re-vamped software and a brand new design.

The Galaxy Note 2 sports a 9.4mm thin chassis with a 5.5-inch 16:9 display at 1280x720 resolution. The screen itself is an HD SuperAMOLED panel, similar to what Samsung's included on the Galaxy S3. Visually the Galaxy Note is similar to the Galaxy S 3. The home button, the rear of the phone, the overall shape all strike a resemblance to the smaller sibling. Like its predecessor, the Note 2 sports a Wacom-based pressure-sensitive "S Pen," which has been redesigned. The pen is now taller and thicker, the button on the side now has texture to it, and it has a rubber tip which creates a subtly different action on the screen.

On the inside, the Galaxy Note 2 is powered by a 1.6GHz Exynos 4 Quad CPU -- the same CPU found inside the S3, only at a higher frequency. That's backed up by 2GB of RAM and 16,32, and 64GB of storage. Samsung will offer the device in both 3G/HSPA and 4G LTE flavors, though for the moment there's no info on which version will be offered in which markets. On the software side, there's Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, backed up by Samsung's TouchWiz Nature UX. And like the original Note, pen-centric apps like S Note have been included to take advantage of the new Note's unique hardware.

Availability has yet to be announced, but we'll update you just as soon as any announcement is made. In the meantime, keep it locked to AC for continuing live coverage of the event, and hands-on reports with more info on the device itself.

Militants attack Pakistan army post, kill 8 troops

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Taliban militants attacked a Pakistani army post near the Afghan border before dawn Wednesday, killing eight soldiers, a reminder of the threat posed by insurgents despite numerous military offensives against them.

The attack occurred in the South Waziristan tribal area, once the main stronghold for the Pakistani Taliban, said a military official. The military launched a large offensive against militants there in 2009, but insurgents still operate in the area and periodically stage attacks.

In addition to the eight soldiers killed, six others were wounded in the attack near Ghatbadr village in the Shakai Valley, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. The attack started around midnight and lasted for several hours, he said.

The attack followed the start of a new army operation to rout militants from the area, said the official. During the operation over the last two days, soldiers killed 18 militants and destroyed seven of their hideouts. Another 21 militants were wounded, according to the official.

The official initially said nine soldiers were killed but later lowered the toll to eight.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on the post. The group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, claimed they killed 12 soldiers and beheaded some of them.

The differing accounts could not be independently verified.

The military has conducted offensives against the Pakistani Taliban in six of the seven areas that make up Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region along the Afghan border.

The U.S. said recently that Pakistan plans to launch an operation against the Pakistani Taliban in the last major militant sanctuary in region, North Waziristan. But Pakistani military officials have downplayed the comments, saying they plan to slowly increase pressure against militants in North Waziristan rather than launch a sweeping offensive.

Many Pakistani Taliban militants fled to North Waziristan and other parts of the tribal region following the army operation in South Waziristan in 2009.
