Marketing sophomore Ryan Hagan poses with several of his shirts for his charity organization, World United Organization, on Oct. 31, 2012, in his apartment. Hagan has been selling shirts since his junior year in high school, and plans to make a trip to Africa in the future for the organization. Danyelle Morrow/The State News

Marketing sophomore Ryan Hagan has a vision that expands beyond his exams or future housing assignments. While many college sophomores are searching for roommates and online flashcards, Hagan is on the hunt for his next opportunity to change the world.

Hagan and his friend JR Wuo, a senior at Trine University, are the co-founders of World United Organization. The nonprofit seeks out the world?s solvable problems, raises awareness and attempts to solve them.

According to Hagan, World United Organization, or W.U.O., is his way to pursue his dream of improving the lives of the less fortunate.

W.U.O. Wear is a clothing line Hagan and Wuo created in high school, and served as the gateway to launching World United Organization.

?My goal in life is to change the world, and W.U.O. Wear and (World United Organization) makes that possible,? he said.

When the first W.U.O. Wear T-shirt was made, Wuo said he didn?t anticipate the success it would bring.

?(W.U.O. Wear) started off as a joke, because my last name is Wuo,? he said. ?We joked around about starting a clothing line ? with no intent of actually doing it.?

Wuo had his ?aha? moment while watching a special on families affected by AIDS.

?I thought, ?I wish there was something I could do about this,?? Wuo said.

During their junior year of high school, Hagan said, the pair sold $4,000 worth of W.U.O. Wear T-shirts and doubled that amount their senior year.

Before Hagan transferred to MSU, he and Wuo began going through the motions to found World United Organization.

Both freshmen were unexperienced in business and Hagan said that was the hardest part of getting their organization up and running.

?It helped me realize there?s a lot of detail in the business world,? he said.

Since forming the nonprofit, Hagan has left Trine University and expanded World United Organization to MSU students.

When it comes to business, Hagan said moving to a larger university has helped the organization gain momentum.

?(W.U.O.) has expanded because I?ve been able to meet more people and do more things,? he said.

So far, Hagan has sold about 50 W.U.O. Wear shirts in 2012. All proceeds raised have been set aside for Hagan and Wuo?s upcoming trip to Africa, planned for Dec. 20.

The humanitarians have organized a trip to the Ghaban village in Africa to install a state-of-the-art water purifier that would provide villagers with clean and accessible water.

While in Africa, Hagan said he and Wuo will carefully observe their surroundings and plan other ways to benefit the village.

?Our long-term goals (are) to build a school in the village and have money flow through the village,? Hagan said. ?We?re going to decide that once we get over there.?

Hagan and Wuo have been well received by fellow students so far, said Trine junior Meredith Beer, a friend of both Wuo and Hagan.

?At school, I think people take them very seriously,? she said. ?A lot of people want their shirts. I haven?t really experienced them much outside of my school but I?m sure people take them pretty seriously.?

? Renminbi (RMB) market in London sees rapid growth

The offshore Renminbi (RMB) business in London has seen a substantial growth since an initiative launched April this year, the City of London said Tuesday.

Citi, a new member of the City of London RMB initiative launched in April, reported that its offshore RMB payments in London had risen 40% this year.

Meanwhile, the company also saw its UK-domiciled Renminbi accounts growing 80%.

JP Morgan (NYSE:JPM), another member of the initiative, announced that its UK trading volumes in Renminbi had doubled in the past year and were up 50% in the past 6 months.

HSBC (NYSE:HBC), also a member, noted that its offshore Renminbi trades in London rose 40% in the past year.

?I?m delighted to see that the volume of RMB business in London is growing steadily,? said Mark Boleat, policy chairman of the City of London Corporation and chairman of the City of London initiative?s Steering Committee.

He said RMB?s success echoes the findings of a research report published in June this year, which showed that corporates are very interested in using renminbi products and services in London to generate savings and make business with China more straightforward to transact.

?Education and marketing is a core part of the City of London initiative?s work, to help corporates understand the benefits of using RMB in trade with China,? he added.

He said the City of London will publish an RMB resource pack and case studies next month from different industries trading with China including metals, textiles, automotive and luxury goods, to help raise awareness among European corporates.

The City of London initiative was launched on 18 April 2012. It aims to develop London?s position as the leading western hub for international Renminbi (RMB) business and boost the RMB?s wider international use for trade and investment.

Three banks, namely the China Construction Bank (HK:0939), the Citi (NYSE:C) and Industrial and the Commercial Bank of China (PINK:IDCBY), recently joined the City of London RMB initiative.

Contributors affiliated with University of California, Harvard are Obama?s No. 1, No. 4 donor groups

Everyone knows American college campuses are teeming with hippies, tree-huggers and Democrats. That?s a dog-bites-man story. But a look at presidential campaign contributions makes the politically lopsided culture of academia stand out in stark relief.

Individuals and political action committees affiliated with University of California system and Harvard University are collectively?the highest and fourth-highest donors to President Barack Obama?s re-election campaign, respectively. That?s not just a ranking of colleges and universities. It?s a ranking of everyone.

The data come from the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan organization that tracks campaign contributions.

Individuals and PACs affiliated with the University of California system have given the 2012 Obama campaign $927,568 thus far. The grand total from Harvard is $535,405.

By way of comparison, the number-two collective contributor to Obama?s campaign is Microsoft Corporation ($680,769) and right behind it is Google Inc. ($661,996). Microsoft and Google are, respectively, the publicly traded companies with the third- and fifth-highest market capitalizations in the United States.

It?s important to note that the schools themselves did not make these mammoth donations. Rather, the money came from professors, staff, and others associated with the schools.

Several institutions of higher learning gave the University of California and Harvard a run for their money in the race to fund the Obama campaign. Individuals and PACs from Stanford University rank seventh on the list of Obama?s biggest donors. Columbia University and the University of Chicago have to be especially disappointed, coming in just outside the top 10, at numbers 11 and 14.

Of the organizations that saw their individual employees and PACs donate to Mitt Romney?s campaign, the top six are all financial institutions. No organization in the top 20 is a university or educational entity.

Figures tabulated by the Center for Responsive Politics show a huge chasm between the amounts collectively donated to Obama and Romney at most colleges and universities for which it has collected data.

People and PACs associated with the University of North Carolina system, for example, have donated $151,760 to the Obama campaign and $1,750 to the Romney campaign. The spread is slightly smaller at Ohio State University: $58,579 for Obama and $17,750 for Romney.

Schools where the amounts given to Obama and Romney are roughly equal are hard to find, but they exist. For example, Texas A&M?s affiliated donors?favor?Obama over Romney, but just barely ? by a $19,449 to $15,400 margin.

There are also colleges and universities where Romney has received enormous financial support, of course. Not too surprisingly, the Mormon-affiliated Brigham Young University is among these rare birds. People and PACs at BYU have given Romney $59,109 and Obama a paltry $4,201.

The education industry is a high roller in American politics beyond the presidential race as well. During the 2012 election cycle, the industry as a whole has funded political candidates, political parties, and outside groups to the tune of more than $40.7 million.

A large majority of that cash went to individual Democratic politicians.

Individuals and PACs associated with the University of California system, for example, have shelled out $1,770,633 in political donations this election cycle. A whopping 94 percent of that total went to Democrats.

The story is the same in ivory towers across the country. At the University of Pennsylvania, individuals and PACs gvae 88 percent of their collective $472,008 to Democrats. At the University of Washington, Democrats got 98 percent of $440,559. Democrats collected 85 percent of the $395,198 contributed at the University of Michigan.

(AP) ? Apple introduced a smaller iPad, as expected, but also updated its full-sized one. It also unveiled new Mac computers, including a 13-inch version of a MacBook Pro with sharper, "Retina" display and an iMac with a new type of storage drive.

With a screen measuring 7.9 inches on the diagonal, the iPad Mini is about two-thirds the size of the regular iPad. It's slightly larger than the 7-inch tablets from Amazon.com Inc. and Google Inc. The regular iPad is 9.7 inches.

Apple has sold more than 100 million iPads since their debut in April 2010. Although Apple dominates the worldwide tablet market with 70 percent of shipments in the second quarter, according to IHS iSuppli, Amazon and Google have been able to make in-roads with the smaller alternatives. A smaller iPad from Apple Inc. could help the company cement its dominance.

The event at the California Theatre came a few days before Microsoft Corp. starts selling a new version of its Windows operating system, one designed to work well on both traditional computers and tablets. Microsoft is also releasing its own tablet, the Surface, on Friday. It will be slightly larger than the full-sized iPad.

Here's a running account of Apple's event, presented in reverse chronological order. All times are PDT. Presenters included Apple CEO Tim Cook and Philip Schiller, the senior vice president for worldwide marketing.

    ___

    11:15 a.m.

    The event wrapped up.

Apple stock declined $16.03, or 2.5 percent, to $618. Shares of Amazon.com Inc., whose Kindle Fire tablets compete with the iPad, fell 28 cents to $233.50.

    ___

    11:10 a.m.

Advance orders for the iPad Mini and the new full-sized iPad will begin Friday. They will be available for sale Nov. 2.

The $329 price puts the Mini between the 2011 full-sized iPad model at $399 and the 4-inch iPod Touch at $299. By contrast, Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire starts at $159, and Google Inc.'s Nexus 7 at $199. Both have 7-inch screens.

There's also a version that will be capable of using cellular networks. That will go on sale two weeks later. That's a feature the cheaper, 7-inch tablets don't have.

    ___

    11:05 a.m.

The new iPad Mini starts at $329, which makes it more expensive than rival, 7-inch products.

    ___

    10:55 a.m.

The smaller iPad has a 7.9-inch screen, digitally reversed from the full-sized iPad's 9.7 inches.

Schiller said all of the software designed for the original iPad will work on the smaller one, as the display is 1024 by 768 pixels ? the same as the original iPad.

The latest, full-sized iPad has a sharper screen at 2048 by 1536 pixels.

    ___

    10:52 a.m.

After much anticipation, Schiller unveils the iPad Mini.

"You can hold it in one hand," he said. "It's not just a shrunken down iPad. It's an entirely new design."

    ___

    10:50 a.m.

Apple unveiled a new iPad, but it's a full-sized version ? an update to the third-generation device that went on sale in March. It promises a faster processing chip and faster wireless Wi-Fi connectivity.

It will also sport the new connector that Apple unveiled with the new iPhone 5 last month. Apple says the new connector helps the company keep up with modern times, but it also requires consumers to buy new accessories or an adapter.

Prices remain the same, starting at $499.

    ___

    10:45 a.m.

Apple says it sold its 100 millionth iPad two weeks ago. That means it sold about 16 million since the end of the second quarter, the last time it released a figure.

Cook discussed how teachers have been using iPads in their classrooms and said electronic textbooks through iBooks are now available for 80 percent of the high school curriculum. It was a sign Apple was looking to challenge Amazon.com Inc., which has been pushing textbooks on its Kindle devices.

    ___

    10:40 a.m.

The audience cheered as Schiller unveiled new iMac computers. It looks like a super-thin display screen, but Schiller noted that "there is an entire computer in here."

There will be models with Apple's new fusion drive. That's a combination of the traditional, spinning hard drive and one using "flash" memory. Flash is faster, but capacity is smaller. Schiller says the fusion drive will have the speed of flash and the capacity of regular hard drives.

They will come in two display sizes. The 21.5-inch version starts at $1,299, and the larger one at $1,799. The smaller version will be available next month and the larger version in December.

As he introduced the new iMacs, he showed on a giant display how the iMac has shrunk over the years.

    ___

    10:25 a.m.

Schiller teased audience by talking about the Mac Mini, not an iPad Mini.

"You knew there would be something called 'mini' in this presentation," he said to laughter.

A new Mac Mini starts at $599 and comes with 4 gigabytes of RAM, or working memory, and a 500 GB hard drive for storage. A $999 version comes with a terabyte hard drive, or double the capacity.

    ___

    10:20 a.m.

After touting growth in Mac computers at a time when sales of Windows-based machines are slowing, Apple introduced a new MacBook. In June, Apple introduced a MacBook Pro that is about as thin as its already-slim MacBook Air, but with a sharper display. That model had a 15.4-inch screen.

At Tuesday's event, Schiller unveiled a smaller version, with a screen of 13.3 inches. He noted that the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro that Apple already makes has been the company's top-selling laptop. The new version adds the sharper display and is thinner and lighter than the regular MacBook Pro.

"In typical Apple fashion, we are going to take our best product and introduce something better and much cooler," he said.

    The starting price is $1,699.

    ___

    10:15 a.m.

Cook began the presentation with a customary update on past products.

Cook talked about the success of the iPhone 5 and the new iPod Touch, both released last month. He said there have been 3 million iPod Touches sold.

He also talked about an upgrade to Apple's software for mobile devices, iOS 6. He said there were now 200 million devices running iOS 6.

He said the app store had more than 700,000 apps, including 275,000 for the iPad. Customers have downloaded more than 35 billion apps, he said.

He touted an e-book app called iBooks and announced a new version with a new reading option: continuous scrolling. With that, you keep scrolling down the screen rather than flip pages to keep reading. You can also tap on a quote to share instantly on Facebook or Twitter.

    ___

    10 a.m.

The event opens with Cook appearing on stage. "We have some fond memories here, and we're going to create a few more today," he told the audience.

Dreamweaver Tutorial: Meta Tags and Search Engine Optimization ...

Interesting as I?m now working on? SEO, myself, for my site. I?ve been talking to the SEO specialists at Google and they seem to feel that keywords are practically valueless,? as the search engines place practically no importance anymore to keywords since anything can be put here and has been abused in the past. Also, they say that the use of the H1 heading can?t be used too much or it will lose it?s value. What is your feeling about the best method for SEO? Is it paying for advertising? Thanks.

Republican Party gives Romney financial advantage over Obama

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mitt Romney held a financial advantage over President Barack Obama heading into October thanks to strong fundraising by the Republican Party that will allow its candidate to spend more on the last stretch toward the November 6 election.

Campaign finance disclosures show the Romney campaign, the Republican National Committee and the fund they use jointly had $183.1 million in cash on hand at the end of September, more than Obama and the Democratic Party, who had $149.1 million.

Obama's campaign on its own has dwarfed Romney's in the money stakes in recent months, raising $136.2 million in September, according to a Reuters tally of latest reports. The Romney campaign alone raised much less: $76.1 million, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission.

But when taken together with the RNC, Romney had more to spend on advertising and get-out-the-vote efforts as the campaign entered its last lap with the two men running neck and neck in polls.

September was one of the toughest months for Romney as he lagged in the polls and suffered from the release of a secretly taped video showing him make remarks that 47 percent of the population who receive government benefits are "victims."

Nonetheless, he continued to grow his small-donor base in September and raised nearly a third of his money from checks of less than $200, Saturday's filings showed.

The FEC filings do not account for what the campaign said was a big uptick in online donations after Romney's strong performance in the first presidential debate on October 3.

Romney also has an advantage in support from "Super PACs" and other outside groups such as Republican strategist Karl Rove's nonprofit Crossroads GPS, which funds anti-Obama advertisements.

Republican-aligned groups spent $84.1 million on ads from September 10 through October 18, while pro-Democratic groups laid out less, $23.1 million, despite a strong fundraising month by pro-Obama Super PAC Priorities USA Action, according to Reuters analysis of spending disclosures to the FEC.

The lynchpin of Obama's fundraising effort has been the campaign's ability to collect donations on its own as opposed to the Democratic National Committee or outside-spending groups.

Campaign finance experts say Obama's more direct control of money offers greater flexibility in how to use it. Parties have limits on how much they can coordinate with a candidate's campaign on spending and TV stations promise campaigns - not outside groups or parties - the lowest prices on ads.

However, the ad barrage of the 2012 campaign has boosted prices on precious advertising time in crucial swing states and local TV station managers say campaigns are paying little attention to how much an ad costs as long as it airs in the little time left before Election Day.

Obama's campaign spent a whopping $111.4 million in September, the vast majority of that on the production and airing of ads, according to Reuters analysis of FEC filings. Romney's campaign, by comparison, spent $54.7 million, also mostly on advertising.

    SMALL DONOR CHASE

Obama this week released a list of "bundlers" - people raising $50,000 or more for his re-election effort - indicating that so far in this campaign, they helped him with at least $180.1 million. Romney has not disclosed his bundlers.

Romney held his last fundraiser in Florida on Saturday and the Obama campaign had its last one earlier this month.

Obama's prowess with small donors remained on a level with his record-setting 2008 White House bid as he relied on people giving $200 or less for more than a third of his cash this year.

Dollar-to-dollar, Romney's small-donor haul was at least $12.4 million versus $49.5 million for the president, according to a Reuters analysis of data provided to the FEC.

Small donor enthusiasm for Romney lagged through the summer months as he struggled to coalesce the party after the Republican primaries, said Bill Allison, editorial director at the nonpartisan Sunlight Foundation, which advocates for campaign finance transparency.

"Republicans are much more excited about him now," Allison said. Republican small donors include many evangelical conservatives and "they have become the forgotten group in the 2012 campaign," he said.

The RNC had $82.6 million in September, trouncing its Democratic counterpart, which had $4.6 million after taking out a $10.5 million loan.

Ad Agencies Hate Lance Armstrong - Business Insider

Armstrong: not welcome on Madison Avenue

In hindsight, Lance Armstrong's sponsors took way too long to terminate their relationships with the athlete, according to some advertising executives.

As of today, all of Armstrong's sponsors have dropped him from their rosters after the USADA released evidence that the cyclist used performance enhancing drugs for years.

It sounds trite, at first. After all, Armstrong has done way more damage to himself and the sport of cycling than he has to advertising. But remember that advertising is the industry that has poured millions into Armstrong's brands -- his race team, his Livestrong charity, and himself. They invested serious cash in Armstrong in just the same way as if he were a stock or a bond. Armstrong has lost $30 million in the fiasco. Put another way, his endorsers have wasted $30 million on him.

And now, with Armstrong finally proven guilty, some execs are breaking ranks and venting their fury at what Armstrong has done to the branding and sponsorship business. It is extremely unusual for ad execs to talk frankly about their rivals and clients like this.

Amir Kassaei, the chief creative officer of DDB Worldwide told us, "In the case of Nike and Lance Armstrong, Nike was late in their decision to terminate that relationship considering the illegal drug accusations that were constantly in the news. These allegations against Lance are completely off base from what Nike's brand platform is ? authentic athletic performance."

A number of sponsors expressed sadness and hopefulness for the future, but these advertisers are just mad.

"Dropping [Armstrong] was a no-brainer. He lied to the public. He lied to investigators. And he lied to his partners at Nike," said Matt MacDonald, co-chief creative officer of JWT New York, "I feel like he even lied to me personally when I attended his rally in Austin after winning his first Tour de France. So maybe I'm a little bitter."

This is because Armstrong was more than just a celebrity, he represented an entire community of professional cyclists and their fans.

"Contrary to the cases involving Tiger Woods and Michael Vick, Lance's role went far beyond himself and affected the sport of cycling by influencing other athletes and undermining the cycling community," explained Sharon Napier, CEO of Partners + Napier, A Project:WorldWide Agency. She added, "The simplest definition of a brand is 'a promise made and a promise kept.' As overwhelming evidence suggests, Lance didn?t keep his promise to the cycling community. He not only hurt the sport, he damaged the Livestrong Foundation and brand. I believe Nike?s decision to continue their support of the Livestrong Foundation and those affected by cancer is a great example of a brand really living their values."

MacDonald does acknowledge that knowing when a brand ambassador has gone too far is not always obvious: "In general, we advise our clients to walk away from any endorser whose personal life and actions overwhelm the positive attributes they bring to the brand."?

Ask Engadget: What's the best way to store my media collection?

    Ask Engadget

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Michael, who is suffering from a storage crunch. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I'm a bargain-basement kinda guy, and I've picked up lots of DVDs cheaply during the sale season(s). I was planning to rip my collection with Handbrake so I could watch them on my iPad, but my 1TB HDD is already close to being maxed out! Is there a better solution out there than just buying a 2TB HDD now, waiting a year and buying a 3TB HDD when the prices come down? Is there a cheap RAID-style system that plays nicely with my iTunes? Please help!"

    • You can pick up a standalone 3TB external HDD for between $150 and $200,
    • Or you could take the leap and set up an iTunes home server, perhaps using the cheapest Synology DiskStation, which is $200 plus the cost of the drives. That way you can get a 4TB iTunes server for just under $400.
    • You could also snag a Drobo that'll give you the same storage options with significantly increased expandability, up to 16TB in the future.

That said, perhaps our friendly readers know a way to tame this man's ever growing media collection, so if you've already set up your own system, why not share your knowledge in the comments below?

NEW ORLEANS Many parents have questions about their child's sleep problems, primarily after 6 p.m. when professional assistance is not readily available, according to an abstract presented Oct. 21 at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans.

The abstract, "An iPhone Application for Infant and Toddler Sleep: Characteristics and Concerns of Users," reviewed information from nearly 8,000 users of a free iPhone app designed to aid sleep in young children. Of those users, 365 (4.6 percent of 8,000 users) submitted a question to an "Ask the Expert" feature over a three-month period. The app users were typically mothers (69 percent) with an average age of 28. Their children were primarily infants (68 percent of children were age 3 to 11 months), followed by toddlers (2- percent of children were age 12 to 36 months) and newborns (12 percent were age 0-2 months).

The most frequent questions involved night wakings (22.7 percent), sleep problems (22.2 percent) and general sleep (21.9 percent). Less frequently, questions related to napping (15.3 percent), bedtime (13.4 percent) and sleep safety (4.4 percent). Questions were most frequently submitted between midnight and 6 a.m. (37 percent) and 6 p.m. and midnight (22 percent).

"Our results found that the most common questions that parents ask pertain to sleep problems and night waking," said study author Jodi A. Mindell, Ph.D. "These questions are most often submitted in the evening and even overnight times when professional help is typically not available."

"Research has shown that behaviorally based interventions are highly effective for infant and toddler sleep disturbances, and yet they do require personal contact with a trained professional," Mindell said. "As a result many children go untreated."

While the iPhone application provides widespread access to some assistance for families, the study supports the need for greater accessibility to health, and in particular, sleep-related information.

Pregnant NYC woman found slain day before wedding - The Olympian

NEW YORK ? A woman who was eight months pregnant was found stabbed to death Saturday in her apartment, the day before her wedding, police said.

Vindalee Smith, 38, was found on the floor of her apartment in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn with a gaping wound in her neck. It wasn't clear how long she'd been dead before the body was discovered by her landlord. Her unborn child did not survive.

There was no sign of forced entry, and no weapon was recovered, police said. Investigators are looking for a possible suspect. They interviewed her friends and family, and spoke to her fiance.

"I can't even begin to imagine who would want to do that," her friend, Sybil Samuel, told local newspapers. "It would be the devil, to kill a woman with a child in her stomach. They killed two people."

Smith had four children in their teens and 20s, friends said. A baby shower had been planned for Saturday evening, followed by a small wedding Sunday. Friends told reporters that Smith had met her fiance about a year ago.

Smith was a devout Seventh-Day Adventist and attended New Dimension Church, where she was supposed to get married. Congregation members were concerned when she didn't show up for morning service.

"She was always on time- always the first person at church," Tyler Harrigan told the Daily News of New York. "When the news came to the church, the whole church broke down. We started to bawl. All the children were crying."

A crowd of mourners gathered outside Smith's home, praying and weeping, and singing hymns. The church pastor Rev. Ferron Francis told the Daily News that Smith had once feuded with a former neighbor who threatened to kill her, but it was months ago and the trouble had stopped when she moved to the new apartment.

Calls made by The Associated Press to the church were not immediately returned.

Some friends said that Smith once worked for a home health care agency, but may have been recently unemployed.

An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.

Pope creates first Native American saint

    Lucas Jackson / Reuters

A statue of St. Kateri Tekakwitha in Auriesville, New York, seen on Friday.

    By Claudio Lavanga, NBC News

VATICAN CITY - She was known as Lily of the Mohawks, or the Pocahontas of the Catholic Church. But on ?Sunday, Kateri Tekakwitha went down in history as the first Native American saint.

Born more than 300 years ago in the Mohawks village of Ossernion - today Ausierville, forty miles from Albany NY - she was one of seven people canonized by Pope Benedict XVI Sunday in an open-air ceremony held in Saint Peter?s Square.?

One of the remaining six was also American: Mother Marianne Cope, a 19th century Franciscan nun who cared for leprosy patients in Hawaii.

Kateri had a short life ? she died at 24 ? and yet, as for most saints, her devotion to Christianity, sacrifices and ?heroic virtue? were so inspirational that her legacy survived for generations.

    Alessandra Tarantino / AP

Pope Benedict XVI kisses the altar as he celebrates a canonization ceremony, in St. Peter's Square, at the Vatican, Sunday.

Her mother was a Christian Algonquin woman who was captured during a raid and given as wife to a Mohawks tribal member. She was born in the middle of the 17th century, a time of infighting between rival American tribes, deadly diseases and colonization. And a time when French Jesuit priests preached in the area, trying to convert locals to Christianity.

PhotoBlog: inaugurates 'Year of Faith' amid concerns over rising secularism

Kateri was only four years old when a smallpox epidemic spread among the Mohawks tribe. Her parents and younger brother were killed and although she survived she was left with permanent scars on her face and an impaired vision. The Jesuit priests were held accountable for having brought the disease, and three of them were slaughtered.

And yet, at the age of 20, Kateri swapped the Totem for the Crucifix.

She converted to Catholicism after living close to French Jesuit priests, something her family and village saw as a betrayal for siding up with colonizers. She soon became a pariah in her own tribe after refusing to marry a Mohawk man, and was forced to leave the village to practice freely her new faith. She walked hundreds of miles to Quebec, Canada, to join a community of Christian women, and took a vow of lifetime chastity.

Video shows an anti-austerity protester jumping the railing at the observation deck atop St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican to set up camp with a sign on the iconic Italian dome. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

Soon her devotion led to self-inflicted painful penances. She is believed to have walked barefoot in show, for whipping herself bloody with reeds, praying hours in an unheated chapel on her bare knees on a cold stone floor or for sleeping on a bed of thorns.

In the end, the punishing penances are believed to have contributed to the weakening of her health, until her premature death at 24 years old. And it was immediately after her death, the legend goes, that it became clear she would be on her way to sainthood. Her smallpox scars, witnesses claimed, miraculously disappeared minutes after her death.

Although the petition for her canonization was filed in 1884, she was only blessed ? the first step to become a saint ? by Pope John Paul II in 1980.

The miracle that sealed her sainthood came in 2006, when Jake Finkbonner, then a 5-year old boy from Ferndale, WA, miraculously recovered from a flash-eating bacteria, allegedly through Kateri?s intercession. Jake contracted Necrotizing fasciitis, a potentially deadly infection, after cutting his lip on a baseball field. In a matter of days, his condition became so critical his parents gave him his last rites and discussed donating his organs.

When medical help seemed hopeless, his father Donny, a Catholic member of the native American Lummi tribe, turned to Kateri, already an icon in the local catholic community and the subject of many stories he heard as a child. His congregation prayed Kateri and his mother even placed a small relic, a small piece of Tekakwitha?s wrist bone, on his body. ?Soon after, Jake recovered.

On his website, Jake also remembers the role played by doctors: ?Please don't confuse the issue which is that my survival is a miracle?, he writes.? ?We thank the doctors at Children's Hospital for all that they did to save my life.? I wouldn't be here without them?.

Pope Benedict's XVI former butler took the stand in a Vatican courtroom and admitted to stealing private documents from the papal apartment, but ?Paulo Gabriele said he didn't feel guilty of aggravated theft.? He also said he feels guilty of betraying the pontiff's trust.? NBC's Claudio Lavanga reports.??

The canonization of Kateri has been welcomed with mixed feelings in the 2.5 million-strong Native American community. While most of the 680,000 catholic Native Americans are thrilled to finally have their own saint and icon, others still resent the role of Catholicism during the colonial era and the way it affected the indigenous traditions, culture and customs.?

The Vatican's complicated saint-making procedure requires that the Vatican certify a "miracle" was performed through the intercession of the candidate ? a medically inexplicable cure that can be directly linked to the prayers offered by the faithful. One miracle is needed for beatification, a second for canonization.?

The five other new saints are: Jacques Berthieu, a 19th century French Jesuit who was killed by rebels in Madagascar, where he had worked as a missionary; Giovanni Battista Piamarta, an Italian who founded a religious order in 1900 and established a Catholic printing and publishing house in his native Brescia; Carmen Salles Y Barangueras, a Spanish nun who founded a religious order to educate children in 1892; and Anna Schaeffer, a 19th century German lay woman who became a model for the sick and suffering after she fell into a boiler and badly burned her legs. The wounds never healed, causing her constant pain.
