Funny and true: We ran into the above meme on Reddit and it made us laugh and nod. And for a foggy Thursday morning here in Seattle, that?s not half bad. The meme has also generated a heck of a lot of comments on the sub-Reddit for Seattle.
The first round of the debate centered on where the comparison meme had originated. Some thought they?d seen it about Portland vs someone ? Then another Redditor slammed the door on that thread: ?As usual, Portland is claiming to be the first ones to start something before everyone else. (expletive deleted) hipsters.?
Here?s three comments that jumped out at us:
thegodsarepleased wrote: This is totally ridiculous, OP. There is no way anyone in Seattle would be caught drinking a macro.
hairofbrown considered: I grew up in eastern Washington also. Parts of it I miss, mostly the desert and four beautiful seasons. Most of the folks are very conservative, but also pretty likeable. I don?t engage in political or religious discussions with them. Best to look elsewhere for common ground!
beer_engineer summed it up: I say both sides are willfully ignorant of each other. I grew up on a farm between Ephrata and Moses Lake. People there think Seattle (which means anything West of Ellensburg) residents are the root of all evil. They HATE when people drive to ?their? part of the state for recreation. I actually got asked to leave a bar a couple years ago in Moses Lake because in casual conversation, I mentioned I was a native to that area, and relocated to the West Side. People over on the wet side of the state often know little to nothing about the people/culture of Eastern WA. Many I talk to barely know what lies just east of Snoqualmie pass.
Now for the ridiculous deep dive (it?s the age of the Internet afterall):
FindTheBest.com says our two cities both rate a 3 out of 5. They have a long list of comparative numbers but who knows where they got them or what they really mean. Nevertheless, in the age of random rankings and endless expertise ? we?ll just take their word for it.
One of the more thoughtful comparisons of our two cities was written in 2009 by a health blogger at Wellsphere named VW.
The writer begins:
Recently another blogger friend confused my hometown of Spokane (the second largest city in Washington state) with Seattle (the largest city in Washington). I had to laugh because it happens a lot. When people think of Washington, they think of Seattle. I don?t mind, because at least they know the name of one of our cities. Quick ? name the largest city in Wyoming. What about South Dakota or Montana? Did I stump you? I don?t know, either.
For the purposes of gardening, Spokane (pronounced spo-cann, not spo-cane) is very different from Seattle. For starters, the two cities are nearly 300 miles apart. So for this post I?ve compiled a list of mostly garden-related differences between the two.
Check out her post for the detailed list.
Now for the sublime ? A major sport event of 2009 (hardly covered): Spokane vs Seattle in The World Bikini Sports ?League.
The Snohomish Times triumphed that same year that Snohomish had become the home of the ?NEW World Bikini Sports League ?
?TWBSL League Headquarters at 1024 First Street Snohomish brings needed business to the downtown district. Snohomish native Pat Reagan and long time resident is the driving force behind this jugger-naught.?
(PS: We?re assuming this meme is just ?in the wild? because it has no attribution ? but if it?s yours let us know ? and tell us why you made it!)
